BOC GASES AUSTRALIAN SUPER TOURING CHAMPIONSHIP - ROUND 6 QUEENSLAND RACEWAY, IPSWICH: Practice Report, Friday, July 30

RICHARDS & VOLVO DOMINATE PRACTICE

Works Volvo driver Jim Richards is the early favourite for Sunday's sixth round of the BOC Gases Australian Super Touring Championship after emerging fastest in practice today at Queensland Raceway at Ipswich.

The 51-year-old Melbourne-based New Zealander, who holds second position in the championship, clocked the quickest lap of 1-min 13.30-secs around the 3.1km circuit in fine conditions. Richards set the time in the first of the three 30-mins sessions. The six-times Bathurst 1000 champion opted not to drive in the final session.

Richards finished 0.49-secs clear of his closest rival, defending champion Brad Jones of Albury who was second quickest in an Audi Sport Australia A4, followed by championship leader Paul Morris of Queensland in an ex-works BMW 320.

Sydney's Dean Canto was the leading Independents Cup driver, finishing sixth fastest in a Signature Security Systems Ford Mondeo. Queensland's John Teulan is making his championship debut in the round, driving an ex-works BMW 318 previously raced by Geoff Brabham in the series in 1996. Teulan was 14th quickest in practice. His car has been prepared by Morris' NEMO Racing team.

NSW policeman John Henderson, who missed the previous round at Oran Park in Sydney on July 18 because of a shortage of engine parts, is competing at Queensland Raceway, but did not take part in practice.

Qualifying will be held tomorrow. The three races on Sunday are over 10, 13, and 20 laps, with a compulsory pit stop in the final event for all cars to change two wheels. Morris leads the championship with 152 points, followed by Richards on 131, and Jones equal third with Audi team-mate Matthew Coleman on 103.

DRIVER QUOTES:

JIM RICHARDS (Volvo Racing Australia S40): "We were happy with the balance and set-up of the car after the second practice so we didn't bother going out for the last session. There didn't seem any point wearing out the car when there was little to gain. I'm sure the Volvo is going to be very competitive in qualifying and race trim."

BRAD JONES (Audi Sport Australia A4): "This is the first time the Super Tourers have been at this track and we're still getting familiar with things like brake-markers, and trying different (racing) lines to work out the quickest way around. It's a 'make or break' weekend for us as far as the championship is concerned - we need to close the points gap to the Volvo and BMW."

PAUL MORRIS (NEMO Racing BMW 320): "The Volvo is going quick, but so it should because it's three years newer than my car. We're working on tyres and car set-up. Our aim is to make sure our tyres are in a better condition compared to the others at the end of each race."

JOHN TEULAN (Crossroads Discount Centre BMW 318): "The BMW Super Tourer is a step up from the Nissan production car I've been racing. These cars are wonderful to drive, and very responsive. I'm working my way up to speed, and Paul (Morris) is giving me all the advice I need."
