BOC GASES AUSTRALIAN SUPER TOURING CHAMPIONSHIP - ROUND 2 ORAN PARK, NSW: Practice Report, Friday, April 24

JONES FASTEST - McCONVILLE SPINS

Audi Sport Australia driver Brad Jones is on target to continue his superb record at Sydney's Oran Park Raceway after emerging fastest in today's opening practice sessions for round two of the BOC Gases Australian Super Touring Championship on Sunday.

The 38-year-old from Albury, who won the previous championship round at Oran Park in 1996, clocked a best lap time of 42.63-secs around the 1.9km short-circuit in dry conditions in an Audi Sport Australia A4 quattro. Jones set his time in the second of three 30-mins sessions, and was 0.45-secs inside the race lap record of 43.08-secs held by Queensland's Paul Morris in a BMW 320. Multiple Bathurst 1000 champion Jim Richards was second fastest with 43.13-secs in a works Volvo S40, followed by Jones' team-mate and championship leader Cameron McConville with 43.32-secs. McConville spun in the second session, which was then temporarily halted while his car was bogged in a sand-trap.

Queensland's Cameron McLean was the leading Independents Cup driver, and fourth outright in practice with 43.54-secs in a Greenfield Mowers Racing Opel Vectra, followed by NSW's Mark Adderton in an Attitude Clothing Honda Accord. The next three positions were filled by three drivers making their championship debut - Newcastle's Troy Searle in a Roadchill BMW 318, and NSW pair Trevor Sheumack in a Faber Castell BMW 318 and Adam Kaplan in a Nissan Primera. Searle is a Seventh Day Adventist and is unable to take part in tomorrow's two qualifying sessions. Thus, he will start the two races on Sunday from the back of the grid.

DRIVER QUOTES:

BRAD JONES (Audi Sport Australia A4): "I did my best lap in the second session on a new set of tyres. After losing so much dry-weather track time yesterday because of rain I'm surprised to be going this quick. I did a tyre race-run, but I'll probably go for a softer compound for qualifying and the races. There's still more speed in the car."

JIM RICHARDS (Volvo Racing Australia S40): "We're working away improving the balance of the car. This is an ideal circuit for the Audis because you've got a slow corner coming onto the straight, and a tight corner at the end of it."

CAMERON McCONVILLE (Audi Sport Australia A4): "I spun off at the left-hander on the back section of the circuit. As I turned in I dropped the right rear wheel off the edge of the track. It went around and all I could do was jump on the brakes. There was a lot of mud and dirt under the car so they've had a big clean-up job."

TROY SEARLE (Roadchill BMW 318): "This is basically my first full day in the car since Bathurst (the AMP 1000 on October 5, 1997). We put some new tyres on and I was happy with the lap time. Starting from the back of the grid in the first race will be hard because it's a sprint. I'm more confident about the second race, especially if we can do a good pit stop."
