Alfa Romeo and Opel announced their withdrawal from the series by the end of this season. They called as reasons for this decision, a disproportion between expenses and takings, and doubts to the attitude of the FIA. Opel press speaker Karl Mauer stated: "After an analysis of the current situation of the ITC and its future perspective, we have decided not to continue our engagement in 1997 and later. Our Opinion is that the FIA has not extended on this series as it was expected. In June we requested Bernie Ecclestone for the clarification of some questions. There was no respoense. In particular we complained about the restrictive handling of the TV and video rights and the inferior marketing of the series through the FIA."

Both, Alfa Romeo and Opel will have to pay a panalty of 12 Million DM to the FIA for non fulfillment of the contract, whereupon they are obligated to stay in the ITC series until 1998.
