POST-RACE NOTES: MOPAR PARTS MILE-HIGH NATIONALS, JULY 17-20, DENVER

TOP FUEL *One streak ended, while another continued for the Team Winston Dragster driven by Gary Scelzi and owned by Alan Johnson. Scelzi failed to reach the semifinals for the first time in 12 races this season, losing to event winner Cory McClenathan in the quarterfinals. But Scelzi's first- round victory ensured that Johnson's dragster continued a streak of winning at least one round at the last 30 NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series national events. The last time Johnson's car lost in the first round was at the 1995 U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis with the late Blaine Johnson behind the wheel. *Event runner-up Tony Schumacher climbed into the top 10 of the NHRA Winston point standings for the first time in his career, which started at the 1996 U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis. Schumacher, son of Funny Car pioneer Don Schumacher, is 10th.

FUNNY CAR *Whit Bazemore qualified No. 1 for the first time in his nine-year career. Bazemore also completed a sweep of the event in Team Winston Ford Mustang by winning, and recording the low elapsed time and top speed of the event. *Ron Capps moved into the top 10 of the NHRA Winston point standings for the first time in his career, which started in 1995 in Top Fuel. Capps moved to Funny Car at the start of this season, driving the Copenhagen Chevrolet owned by NHRA legend Don "The Snake" Prudhomme.

PRO STOCK *This was only the second NHRA national event this season in which all three Dodge Avengers qualified. Scott Geoffrion was 12th in the Team Mopar Avenger, Allen Johnson was 13th in the Amoco Avenger, and Darrell Alderman was 15th in the Team Mopar Avenger. All three Dodges also qualified at the Mopar Parts Nationals, May 15-18 at Englishtown, N.J.

PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE *Stephanie Reaves became the first woman in NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle history to record the top speed at a national event. -30- 7/21/97-DC6-111
