Buttonwillow beckons Formula TR 1600 Series
Anaheim, California (April 06, 2006) - Following the eagerly anticipated season-opening double-header at the California Speedway last month, Rounds 3 and 4 of the Formula TR 1600 Series are set for this weekend at Buttonwillow Raceway Park, California, Saturday 8th - Sunday 9th April.
Paladin Motorsports' Parker Kligerman stormed to victory in the first two rounds of the 1600 Series, both wins scored from pole position, and he heads to Buttonwillow looking to further extend his points lead in the #35 entry over team-mate Liam Kenney, the gap between the two emerging talents just 16 points, 72-56. Kenney's brace of second place finishes allowed Paladin Motorsports to celebrate a weekend lock-out of the top two podium steps but the competition will be looking to rectify that when the green flag drops on Saturday afternoon.
Luis Martinez Jr. and Kerstin Smutny captured the third and final podium spots in Rounds 1 and 2 respectively at Fontana, both drivers encouraged to kick start the year with top-three performances although a DNF in Round 2 cost Martinez Jr. crucial championship points. Smutny, racing for CT Motorsports this season, sits fourth overall in the points with a tally of 41 just one point back from Knudsen Racing's Kerry Lynch in third. Lynch's standing is thanks to his consistency in Fontana with fourth and fifth place finishes under his belt but he'll be keen to get the #6 Gatorz Eyewear car a podium finish at Buttonwillow.
Tayler Malsam (Odyssey Motorsports) and Billy Goshen (Goshen Racing) had solid opening weekend's to the 2006 season, Malsam unlucky to leave the California Speedway without a podium finish having run as high as second in Round 2. Tony Welch (Welch Racing) picked up points but will be looking for an improvement in performance from this weekend's races. Alexander Rossi (Odyssey Motorsports) returns to 1600 competition at Buttonwillow having missed the first two rounds due to a date clash with additional race commitments.
Round 3 is set for Saturday, 8th April, with Round 4 taking place on Sunday, 9th April.
The Formula TR 1600 Series offers drivers the chance to compete in Formula Renault 1.6-litre open-wheel race cars over an 18-race season comprised of 9 double-header race weekends from March to October 2006. Circuits visited include California Speedway, Miller Motorsports Park, Buttonwillow Raceway Park and the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
