OLIVER ROWLAND MAKES CAR RACING DEBUT AT SNETTERTON
The 2010 Michelin Formula Renault UK Winter Series got started at Snetterton yesterday. CRS Racing is fielding three cars in the six-race mini-series: two 2010-spec Formula Renault 2.0 racers for Robert Foster-Jones and Oliver Rowland and a BARC car for Evelin Frank.
For a young man making his debut in a racing car, Oliver Rowland did a great job at Snetterton in the Racing Steps Foundation-backed car. He took 13th place in qualifying and admitted that he could have been much higher if it wasn't for a mistake in the final stages of the session.
"I didn't get a clear run in the final laps of qualifying," he said. "I got a good start in the first race though and made good progress, right up to eighth. I caught the next guy and he slowed more than I expected him to going into the chicane so I ended up locking my wheels to avoid hitting him."
Oliver finished that race in 12th place and focused his attention onto race two. Starting from 16th this time he got away well and was up to eighth again.
"When I went for the next position I went wide so I lost a few places and finished in 12th again," explained Oliver. "Considering we haven't tested much though I'm quite pleased with my performance. I felt very comfortable during the races and I'm already looking forward to the next ones."
Robert Foster-Jones didn't have the weekend he had hoped for. He lined up in 12th place for race one after some tyre troubles in qualifying but he made a good start and was running well before losing ground with a small off, finishing in 14th place. Changes were made to the car before race two but Rob was unable to take advantage of these as he was unceremoniously taken out at the chicane on lap one and forced to retire with damaged steering. After a disappointing start to his Winter Series, Rob will be fired up to take top results at Pembrey next weekend.
Evelin Frank also made a successful car racing debut, taking 19th place in both races. As one of the five BARC runners, she was at Snetterton to get results and learn from a competitive race meeting. She did a great job, got the results and really got her confidence up, especially during the rather chaotic race two. She is already looking forward to Pembrey where she will be able to further develop her racing skills.
Pembrey will be a busy event for the Formula Renault teams as it consists of two double-headers. Two races on Saturday and two races on Sunday means the contenders need to hit the ground running as soon as they arrive in Wales.
