BRATT AIMING FOR BIG IMPROVEMENTS IN ROCKINGHAM TEST
Formula Renault UK front runner Will Bratt is focused on making big strides forward during the second day of official pre-season testing at Rockingham Motor Speedway tomorrow after a frustrating start at the Northamptonshire venue earlier today.
Although very unfamiliar with the circuit's 1.95-mile International Supersports layout, Will began the opening day of official testing strongly but attempts to gain more time on new tyres were thwarted on each occasion.
At the end of the day's two sessions the Apotex Scorpio Motorsport sensation was credited with the ninth fastest time, a lap of 1m 16.758 seconds (91.409mph) his best, but the Adderbury 18-year-old knows with the necessary time running on new tyres, his position would have undoubtedly been in the top six.
"It's been quite a frustrating dayas we never really got a genuine run on new tyres while everyone else had at least one run on new rubber and, in some cases, two full runs", said Will.
"To be eight 10ths of a second away from the top of the times certainly isn't indicative of the true picture. We know we can find more time so if the weather stays dry tomorrow we will certainly build on what we have learned today."
Today's test marked the first time Formula Renault UK competitors have been able to utilise the new-for-2007 aerodynamic update kit on their cars and, after a full day of dry running with the revised bodywork, Will is particularly happy with the new front-end on the car which features a brand new nose cone and front wing assembly.
"Considering we have no experience of this track layout we're not too disappointed but having been in the top five for a large part of the test, it was frustrating we were unable to have a genuine new tyre run. I did enjoy using the new aerodynamics for the first time though, particularly the front-end. I'm sure we'll be much quicker tomorrow."
The second day of official pre-season testing takes place at Rockingham tomorrow, Friday, 1st March, with Formula Renault UK competitors having the benefit of three sessions during a day which will be shared with the Formula BMW UK Championship.
Session one for Formula Renault UK is expected to get underway at 10.00, session two is scheduled to start at 12.55 and the third and final session is timetabled to begin at approximately 15.00.
