CALADO FINISHES PRE-SEASON TESTING ON HIGH
Pre-season testing for the 2009 Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship concluded on Wednesday, 25th March with Fortec Motorsport's James Calado setting the fastest time on both the Silverstone National circuit and Grand Prix circuit during the two-day official test.
The 19-year-old from Cropthorne in Worcester, set the quickest time around the 1.64-mile National circuit on Tuesday, 24th March at 53.808s (109.65mph average) during the final session. The single-seater racer, preparing for his second season in the Championship, then headed the timesheets during the second day of testing, this time on the 3.19-mile Silverstone GP circuit, home to this year's British Grand Prix and the venue for rounds 11 and 12 in support of the World Series by Renault on 4th/5th July.
Despite Calado setting the fastest times in five of the eight sessions over the two days, other drives to lead individual sessions were Fortec team-mate Oli Webb (Knutsford, Cheshire) and Alpine Motorsport's Dean Stoneman (Southampton), who took the Graduate Cup title in 2008.
On the National circuit on Tuesday, 24th, returning Formula Renault UK driver Joshua Scott (AUS) in the CRS Racing car, and Graduate Cup driver Lee Dywer (Huddersfield), testing with Hillspeed, were also among the top drivers as was Manor Competition's David McDonald (Ewell, Surrey), following on from his strong performance during testing at Oulton Park last week.
Meanwhile on the GP circuit on Wednesday, 25th, Fortec Motorsport's Will Stevens (Oxshott, Surrey), Mark Burdett Motorsport's Jesse Krohn (FIN), Scott, McDonald and CRS Racing's Lewis Williamson (Golspie) were all among the leading drivers for the day which was affected by intermittent showers.
Commenting on his performance after testing on day two, Calado said: "I'm really pleased with how these two days of testing have gone, and indeed all the pre-season sessions. It's encouraging to set the fastest time and still do it using just half a set of new tyres so I can't ask for more and can't wait for the first race at Brands."
The opening rounds of the 2009 Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship get underway at Kent's Brands Hatch Indy circuit on 4th/5th April.
