Smith Closes in on Formula Renault Title
Wolverhampton's Dean Smith has his sights firmly set on becoming the 2009 Formula Renault UK Champion this weekend at Brands Hatch and be ranked alongside a glittering array of past champions, which include F1 World Champions Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton.
Despite missing the first two races of the season, 21-year-old Smith currently holds a 25 point lead at the top of the championship table after a clean sweep of the points at Rockingham two weeks ago. The Manor Competition driver dominated the opposition at the Northamptonshire circuit to record two pole positions, two wins and two fastest laps, underlining his determination to win and add the Formula Renault crown to the Formula BMW title he won in 2005.
"This weekend is undoubtedly the biggest of my racing career," said Dean Smith. "We go to Brands with a good points lead but anything can happen so we need to focus hard on a solid test day on Friday and then make sure we're at the front of the grid for both races. To achieve what we have this year with so many wins and podiums, especially after we came in to the championship after the opening two races had already taken place, is fantastic. We've worked so hard to get ourselves into a position to win the championship - it'd be great to seal the title with two more race wins."
Dean Smith has been the leading driver in the 2009 Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship this season. Smith's impressive tally from just 16 race starts includes: 6 wins, 5 seconds, 2 thirds, 6 pole positions and 6 fastest laps, helping him to be recognised as one of the best young driving talents in the UK. Dean Smith is planning for next year, with GP2, the Formula One support category, his goal. Preparations for 2010 will get underway with some winter testing and he is hoping for another shot at the McLaren Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year Award later this year.
Rounds 19 & 20 of the 2009 Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship are being held as part of the final British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) meeting of the 2009 season. All of the Formula Renault UK races take place in front of some of the largest crowds in UK Motorsport and also attracts a large audience for the TV coverage shown on ITV1 and ITV4.
