FORMULA RENAULT UK ROOKIE MULHOLLAND IMPRESSES AT SILVERSTONE
Michelin Formula Renault UK rookie Josh Mulholland produced a breakthrough performance during official pre-season testing at Silverstone National Circuit in Northamptonshire today, Tuesday, 9th March, to end the day an excellent ninth fastest on overall times.
The 20-year-old Manor Competition driver, from Randalstown in Northern Ireland, bounced back superbly from a problematic two-day outing at Brands Hatch last week where a string of teething troubles with his brand new Barazi-Epsilon FR 2.0 car limited running and compromised his pace.
At Silverstone today, Josh again faced difficulties with the car's gearing during the morning session but hit back fantastically well in the afternoon to lap with a best time of 54.027 seconds (109.21mph), placing him ninth quickest on combined times.
Ending the test only six 10ths of a second shy of the outright pace, the Mulholland Scrap Metals supported racer managed to shade experienced team-mate Thomas Hylkema into 10th position. Such is the competitiveness of Formula Renault UK, Josh was also within a 10th of a second of the top four.
"This has been a real boost for me, especially with all of the problems we've had with the car since testing began", said the championship newcomer, "Brands Hatch last week was very tough but during the second session today we were finally able to get a run of consistent laps. The end result shows we weren't all that far away from the top guys.
"Considering the lack of running I've had compared to most of the others, I'm very pleased with the outcome. To be just ahead of Thomas (Hylkema) was great and to be within a 10th of a second of the top four shows we did a good job and have made progress. The team has been working hard to get the issues with the car resolved so hopefully the Rockingham test next week will go smoothly."
Leaving Brands Hatch last week with the 17th fastest time, a good performance in itself considering the problems he had to contend with, Josh's efforts at Silverstone today as the ninth quickest driver underline his undoubted potential in Formula Renault UK.
Next on the pre-season testing calendar is a visit to Rockingham in Northamptonshire next Monday, 15th March, and Tuesday, 16th March. Further testing will follow a week later at Snetterton in Norfolk and the first two rounds of the 2010 Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship will then take place on 3rd/4th April at Thruxton in Hampshire.
