DWYER & IDAFAR BOTH SHINE FOR HILLSPEED IN BRANDS QUALIFYING
Formula Renault UK newcomers Lee Dwyer and Menasheh Idafar sparkled in qualifying at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit today, Saturday 4th April, with both drivers earning top six grid starts for tomorrow's season-opening event at the renowned Kent venue.
The Hillspeed duo achieved their excellent performances in contrasting conditions, 18-year-old Dwyer securing a stunning sixth fastest lap during the rain-affected round one session this morning with Idafar excelling in the dry second period by sealing a top six start for round two.
Underlining the potential and pace of Richard Ollerenshaw's Hathersage-based team, today's qualifying outings see Hillspeed's rookie line-up bidding for continued progress tomorrow during the season curtain-raiser's pair of 24-lap races.
"We're very pleased indeed with today's efforts", said Ollerenshaw, "The first session was on a damp track, with rain in the air too, but there was little to choose between running on slicks or treaded tyres. Lee went with slick rubber and did a terrific job to qualify top six on his final lap of the session. Unfortunately for Menasheh, the wet tyres he used didn't work for him.
"It was a bit of a reversal in the dry second session, Menasheh produced a superb effort to get the sixth fastest time while Lee was a little further back in 14th that time -- but even so, he was only three 10ths of a second away from pole position which proves just how close things are this year and particularly at such a short track as Brands Indy. All in all, it's been an outstanding day for us."
During the rain affected first qualifying session this morning, Dwyer's best lap was a time of 45.308 seconds (95.23mph) with Idafar posting a best lap of 47.339 seconds (91.15mph) which placed him 18th on the timesheets.
In round two qualifying, Idafar set a quickest time of 44.347 seconds (97.30mph) to go sixth fastest, and the best of the Graduate Cup drivers, while Dwyer wasn't far behind at all with a time of 44.444 seconds (97.08mph).
The opening two races of the 2009 Formula Renault UK Championship will take place tomorrow, Sunday, 5th April, with round one scheduled to start the day's action at 10.00 and round two timetabled to get underway at 15.45.
Race two is expected to be shown live on ITV4 as part of the broadcaster's lengthy six-hour televisual feast from Brands Hatch. Viewers can watch all of the action through channel 120 on Sky Digital, at channel 117 for cable subscribers and via channel 28 on the Freeview service.
