SUPER FAST THRUXTON
The Formula Renault UK Championship heads south this weekend to super fast Thruxton, in Hampshire. The circuit is a favourite of Adam Christodoulou's; all three of his 2007 pole positions were at Thruxton, one of which was the first ever pole for a rookie in the series. The CR Scuderia team tested there a few weeks ago and all four drivers ran well so there could well be a positive weekend of racing in prospect.
"Adam was on pole at Thruxton last year and went very well during the test so I think he'll have a good weekend," said CRS Team Director, Andrew Kirkaldy. "Scott had a good test too and I was pleased to see how well he did for someone who hadn't been to Thruxton before. Ryuji was up there and should have a competitive weekend and Sten will too after learning a lot at the test. I'll have my hands full at Monza this weekend with the FIA GT race but Chris (Niarchos) will be at Thruxton to suppo rt the guys. They know what needs to be done and I have every faith that we'll be on top by the end of Sunday."
Adam Christodoulou (currently 1st in Championship standings):
"Thruxton is incredibly fast and pretty tricky to get spot on. We use very little downforce due to the long straights so when you first go there you can feel the car moving around a lot more than usual. When it comes to braking you have to remember there's not much downforce and locking up a wheel can cost a few tenths. You can always tell if it's going to be a fast lap because if you can take Goodwood flat at 130mph+ your adrenalin goes through the roof and the slingshot all the way down the straight is unbelievable. My times were good at Thruxton during the test; I had over a three-tenths gap in tricky conditions. I know the track pretty well now and managed second place during the last race of 2007. I'm hoping that now I can top that result and come back with another win. My championship is going extremely well, we're just under a third of the way through it and I've still got a healthy lead. Donington was a real struggle for us but the second placed guy in the championship only caught up by one point. I still have a 30 point lead and I hope to start extending that this weekend."
Ryuji Yamamoto (currently 6th in Championship standings):
"Thruxton is my favourite circuit on the Formula Renault UK calendar and it's where I got my best result last year. I am not satisfied with the results of the last race at Donington Park so I will be going all out to get onto the podium at Thruxton. My lap times weren't great during the test due to some minor troubles but if I can get the speed on the straight I will get a good result this weekend."
Scott Jenkins (currently 9th in Championship standings):
"Thruxton is the fastest circuit in Britain, which automatically means close racing which is something I love. I really l ike the track because of the high speeds and also because of the opportunities for overtaking. I've only been to Thruxton once so I'm still getting to know the track. I hope to achieve a strong top six finish to grab as many points as possible to be in with a chance of a good championship result."
Sten Pentus (currently 14th in Championship standings):
"Thruxton is the fastest track I have ever driven on and that is why I like it so much. My target for this event is to get a good qualifying position for both races and to collect as many points as possible. The Thruxton test went well for me; I made good progress through the test and learnt how to put a good lap together there."
The qualifying sessions at Thruxton take place on Saturday at 0925 and 1510 with both races running on Sunday at 1140 and 1700.
