Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship winner Dean Smith (Wolverhampton) fulfilled his champion's prize on Tuesday, 27th October as he drove a Formula Renault 3.5 car on the 3.321-mile Motorland Aragon circuit.

The 3.5-litre, 425hp machine is used in the World Series by Renault, a Formula One feeder series that has seen Grand Prix winners Robert Kubica and Sebastian Vettel graduate in recent seasons.

Competing with Comtec Racing, the 21-year-old posted the 10th quickest time out of 24 drivers with a time of 1m 44.727s -- 1.118s off the fastest time of the day set by Kevin Magnussen (Pons Racing).

Smith, who won the 2009 title crown with Manor Competition, won an impressive seven rounds despite entering the championship late along with six fastest laps, two lap records and a total of 15 podiums.

Commenting after completing a total of 49 laps Smith said: "It was a fantastic experience driving this car, with a team like Comtec Racing. I started the session on really worn tyres which proved slow. These were then changed for new tyres but these still didn't seem to be working at their best so the team changed them again and we began to find good pace. The afternoon session saw the track temperature drop and had me lapping among the top six drivers.

"The team worked hard all day and every time they made adjustments I went quicker although we didn't quite find a set up that exactly suited my driving style. They were really impressed with my consistency throughout the day though."

Smith added: "I still haven't finalised my plans for next season yet but it is very likely to be a move into either European F3, GP3 or possibly into a World Series by Renault car."
