Atech Reid GP kicked off its 2011 Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship bid with the fastest time in the first official tests at the Brands Hatch Indy circuit today.
Rookie Tio Ellinas, topped the time sheets with a 43.191s lap around the 1.2mile Kent track to finish ahead of several second-year drivers. His team-mate Oscar King was equally impressive, the youngster finishing fifth fastest with a time of 43.867s from the combined morning and afternoon sessions, to wind up quickest of the graduate runners.
Atech Reid GP Team Principal David Hayle was delighted with the performance at this, the first of two days at Brands Hatch: "It was a superb performance not only by Tio, who we expected to be up at the front but also by Oscar, who drove exceptionally well for a young rookie.
"Tio was consistently running in the top two all day, and it's a great start to the season to have him show this pace so early on, finishing nearly half a second ahead of the opposition. Oscar improved throughout the day so I'm particularly happy with his performance which we hope will continue into tomorrow's second day."
Eighteen-year old Tio was equally delighted with his showing: "I'm very happy with the whole day, I worked well with the team and they did a great job today. I was a bit down at the start, but once I'd found my way, I quickly adapted well and so was very pleased to wind up fastest. Tomorrow I'll carry on and do my own thing and hope to continue the pace into the second day."
Joining the Atech Reid GP team for the first official pre-season test, Oscar was also happy to finish the day as top graduate and determined to follow his team-mate at the top of the time sheets tomorrow: "Overall I'm very happy with today, however I'm more determined than ever to be second tomorrow now! My engineer and mechanic were great, we worked really well together and I'm happy to be fastest of the graduate runners. I had a spin late on which I'm not happy about, but other than that it was a great day. I'd like to have a full day of running in the dry, which hopefully we'll get tomorrow."
