MAIDEN SILVERSTONE GRAND PRIX EXPERIENCE GOES WELL FOR SIMS
Alexander Sims, one of the UK's hottest prospects as a potential Formula One star of the future, took his maiden testing mileage on Silverstone's world famous Grand Prix Circuit earlier this week; the 19-year-old thoroughly enjoying every single minute!
The Formula Renault UK single-seater ace, who lives in Wansford near Peterborough, ran on the 3.2-mile Silverstone GP layout on Monday as part of the Manor Competition team's preparations for the 2008 championship.
Marking the first time in the category's history it will have raced on the full Silverstone GP track, the 11th and 12th rounds of the Formula Renault UK season will take place at the venue on 7th/8th June as support to the British round of the World Series by Renault.
Testing at the home of the British Grand Prix is severely restricted so Manor wasted no time in taking advantage of the opportunity to run Alexander and his 2008 team-mates at the full Northamptonshire circuit.
Although having never even set foot on the GP layout, Alexander quickly adapted to the wide straights and fast sweeping turns and by the end of the day he was more than happy with his pace and the progress made.
"I'm pleased with how things went at Silverstone on Monday", said Alexander, "It was great to experience the full Grand Prix circuit for the first time, as soon as you adjust to the greater width of the track and your braking points you get used to it quite well.
"By the end of the day we had made good progress against guys with more experience of the track and we were certainly on the pace. Unfortunately I did have some traffic during our final run so I wasn't able to get the times I wanted but I'm still happy with the work we did.
"Silverstone GP track obviously has some very long straights compared to what we're used to in Formula Renault UK but it doesn't pose any problems for the cars. I'm really looking forward to the races there in June, they should be fantastic."
Having had the benefit of warm Andalucian sunshine during three days of testing with Manor at Monteblanco in Southern Spain just under a fortnight ago, this week's running marked a return to the cold British winter for Alexander.
After the Silverstone test at the beginning of the week, the team then travelled to Brands Hatch Indy Circuit. Wednesday's outing at the Kent venue proved to be an extremely positive test for the Cambridgeshire sensation and he is now eagerly awaiting the start of official pre-season testing just four days from now.
Alexander added: "Brands was good, nice and promising once again which obviously bodes well for the opening two rounds of the season there. I'm confident we've had a very good pre-season so far and now I can't wait for official testing to start next week."
The pre-season really begins to gather momentum now with official Formula Renault UK testing starting this Tuesday, 26th February, at Rockingham Motor Speedway in Northamptonshire. Rockingham also hosts a second day on Wednesday, 27th February.
Official championship testing will then continue for the next three weeks with visits to Brands Hatch Indy Circuit, Silverstone National Circuit and Snetterton Circuit in Norfolk.
