TWO MORE PODIUMS TAKEN BY AKA COBRA
Bardon, Leicestershire - 31 July 2007: The AKA Cobra team was out on track at Snetterton last weekend for rounds 13 and 14 of the 2007 Formula Renault UK Championship. Adam Christodoulou took the team's first podium finish of the weekend with a stunning drive to second in race one and Jeremy Metcalfe recovered from a tough time in qualifying to take third place in race two.
"Snetterton went a lot better than I expected it to. I struggled a bit on Friday and we weren't sure why I was off the pace but it all turned around in time for Saturday. In first qualifying I was right up there at the top for a while and just got edged out to third at the end. The second session was even better; it was incredibly close again and I came away very happy with a front row grid position (second). I had a scare at the start of race two: when the lights went green I left my mark but Dean Smith had stalled on pole position so I had to dodge him and went through into second. I stayed within a second of (Duncan) Tappy all the way to the flag and we both pulled away from the pack so I was very happy with the result. I had a smashing start off the line in race two but this was quickly tarnished when Tappy came straight across the track and gave me no choice apart from the scenic route across the grass. This put me back to fifth. A few laps later I made a move on Will Bratt which didn't pay off and allowed a few others through. I then overtook Richard Singleton at turn one but on that lap it started raining and I ran wide under the bridge and did a full 360! I got back on in sixth and stayed there until the end. I was quite disappointed with sixth as I knew I had the pace for another podium but the luck didn't go my way."
"To finish 10th in race one wasn't too bad really as I had understeer and when you're tucked up behind someone with a lack of downforce you've got problems. We'd have much rather been at the sharp end fighting for a podium but considering where we started I don't think we can be too disappointed with the result. As for race two, I'm really pleased to be back on the podium, I certainly didn't expect this result at the start of the race from ninth on the grid. It just seemed like everything went my way, people were bashing into each other and I was there to pick up the pieces really. The car was working quite well, I made some changes for the second race and they worked. When I could run in clean air the car performed well, to be back on the podium is what we needed and it's a great finish to the weekend."
"I struggled a bit in qualifying. The car was good but for some reason I just couldn't find the last few tenths in the car. The first race went pretty well for me. I moved up from 11th on the grid to an eighth-placed finish, even though I was fighting with a lot of understeer. Race two was a bit of a disaster for me as I had contact on the first lap with Riki Christodoulou which broke my front wing, leaving me with no front grip. I carried on and maintained eighth place for a long time before a few sneaked through. I was lapping pretty slowly with very little grip at the front. Unfortunately when (Ryan) Borthwick passed me he made contact and that ended my race. I just want to move onto the next round now and try and get some top three results!"
"Overall I had a very disappointing weekend at Snetterton; I had engine troubles from the first qualifying session right through to the last race. I ended up 16th in the first session and 15th in the second. I had a reasonable start in the first race and enjoyed a good fight for position with about five other cars throughout the race. Unfortunately the engine played up again and I ended up dropping back to last. I had another good battle in the second race until someone ran over the back of me going into Sears and that was the end of my race."
"Adam did a great job this weekend and it's good to see him progressing so well. Jeremy had a good test day but then a tough time in qualifying, not getting a run on new tyres. He did well to get a podium out of the qualifying results though. Chris had a good qualifying and a good first race but both he and Nathan had a hard time in race two."
