RUSSELL RACING -- 2006 SEASON PREVIEW

Few categories in motorsport can match the Formula Renault UK Championship for its high level of competitiveness and brand new team Russell Racing is well aware of the challenge which lies ahead during the 2006 season.

With the first two races of the championship set to be held at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit, Kent, in just over a week's time (8th/9th April), the Doncaster-based squad is aiming to make a solid start to its maiden campaign in Formula Renault UK and the whole team is confident of a promising season.

Beginning withrounds one and two, the team will be represented on the Brands Hatch grid by Harlesden racer Matt Russell, son of team owner Tim Russell, and the 22-year-old is relishing the prospect of a return to the category in which he made his competitive debut in 2004.

After electing to put his first season of race experience to good use in the Formula Renault BARC series last year, ending his campaign as Vice-Champion and with three race victories to his credit, the North Londoner is looking forward to competing once again in the British Touring Car-Championship-supporting Formula Renault UK series.

"I'm looking forward to the new season", commented Matt. "Obviously, competing in Formula Renault UK with our own team is fantastic, a dream come true, and we're hopeful of making progress at every round during the year, moving up the order as we get more experience under our belts.

"I want to break into the top 10 on a regular basis, that's my chief aim, and if we can improve to be in a position tomake an impression on the front-runners towards the end of our first year then the whole team will be delighted.

"You have to take these things one step at a time though and we know it's going to be a very challenging first season for Russell Racing. But as long as I'm happy with my own performance and I know I've given 100 per cent effort then I'll have no complaints."

Russell Racing, which is run on a day-to-day basis by team manager Rob Croot, will arrive at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit next Thursday evening, 6th April, ahead of pre-event testing on Friday, 7th April. Qualifying for the opening two rounds of the 2006 season will take place on Saturday, 8th April, with both races scheduled for Sunday, 9th April.

From there, the remaining 18 rounds of the championship will take place over nine weekends at the UK's premier motorsport venues, including Oulton Park in Cheshire, Donington Park in Leicestershire and Silverstone in Northamptonshire.
