BRATT REINFORCES FRONT-RUNNING PACE AT SNETTERTON
Scorpio Motorsport's Will Bratt heads to Croft Circuit for the ninth and 10th rounds of the Formula Renault UK season in just over a fortnight's time highly confident following an impressive showing during official testing at Snetterton in Norfolk today.
The 18-year-old, from Adderbury near Banbury, ended the seven hour test with a quickest time of 1m 05.519 seconds (107.25mph) and while on paper the lap credited him with the 11th fastest time overall, in real terms Will's performance was even more impressive as he didn't use new tyres at any point during the day.
While the majority of his rivals opted to take fresh rubber during the latter stages of the afternoon session, Will's Apotex Pharmaceuticals-backed car remained on older tyres and yet he still ended the day less than four 10ths of a second adrift of the top two.
"We're very happy with the test today", said the Oulton Park race-winner, "We didn't use new tyres at all and when it was a level playing field and everyone was using older rubber we were second or third on the times so we're very pleased with our pace.
"While it's obviously important to get the maximum out of both new and old tyres, it's critical to lap well on older rubber as that's what you'll generally have in the races. We're happy with our pace today and I would say with new tyres we would have gained about four or five 10ths of a second which would have popped us back in the top three again."
With approximately two and a half hours of the afternoon session remaining, Will produced an excellent lap of 1m 05.660 seconds to go fourth fastest and then followed it up immediately with his best lap of the day, 1m 05.519 seconds, which -- at the time -- placed him second only to championship leader Patrick Hogan.
"On the whole we've reinforced the pace we've been showing since the start of the year", added Will, "We're continuing to be among the front-runners and this test has given us reason to be very confident ahead of the Croft races in a couple of weeks."
The ninth and 10th rounds of the Formula Renault UK season will take place in less than three week's time, 15th/16th July, at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire. After the recent stand-alone event at Knockhill in Scotland, the Croft races will mark the category's welcome return to the British Touring Car Championship support package.
