BIRD ENJOYS "ALMOST" PERFECT WEEKEND AT DONINGTON

Top In the time sheets in free practice, shattering lap record in qualifying session, qualifying on pole and second, winning first race, setting fastest lap and coming second in the final race of the weekend, as well as joining the TV commentary for the World Series by Renault race, all made for an almost perfect weekend for Sam at Donington Park.

"Almost" he said "because I felt I could have won both races. We certainly had the pace this weekend, thanks to my Fortec engineers and mechanics".

A textbook start in the first race from pole saw Sam pull away from second placed team mate Seb Hohenthal, and he wasn't headed at all during the first race. "I felt I was in complete control of the race" said Sam afterwards "and so I drove steadily from lights to flag, knowing I had a great set up. I hadn't driven the Grand Prix circuit before this weekend, it's a superb track to drive and I'm so pleased to have won in front of such a huge crowd."

It was also fantastic to be asked to help with the commentary for the World Series race. Although I am often interviewed for TV, it was my first time actually presenting and commentating and I was delighted to be asked to do it for such a high profile series - hopefully I'll be back for more of the same very soon."

"I'm happy with the result of the 2nd race. I feel I had the pace to win, but it was a good clean battle with my team mate, Seb, and there was no point taking chances which could have compromised both of us and the team. Overall, I've had a fantastic weekend and I'd like to thank everybody at Fortec for doing such a super job for me, as well as all my sponsors for making it possible.

"I'm really looking forward now to the next meeting at Brands Hatch when I hope we can again improve on my championship position and challenge for more race wins."

Formula Renault UK continues at Brands Hatch on September 23/24.
