SILVERSTONE TEST DELIGHT FOR ON-FIRE METCALFE
Formula Renault UK star Jeremy Metcalfe produced an outstanding performance in official testing at Silverstone National Circuit today, the 18-year-old missing out on the top spot by the smallest of margins - just 0.001 seconds.
The AKA Lemac sensation, from Fleet in Hampshire, was in terrific form throughout the day's pair of three-hour sessions and having been a comfortable fourth quickest during the morning with a time of 55.356 seconds (106.59mph), he lapped a full half second faster in the afternoon to close his account with a time of 54.878 seconds (107.51mph).
Speaking at the conclusion of the test, Jeremy commented: "I'm very pleased with today as we learnt a lot about the car, we completed a lot of important set-up work and all in all it proved to be one of our most productive tests of the year.
"Unfortunately I wasn't able to complete my run on new tyres this afternoon due to red flags being shown and, therefore, an early end to the session. My fast lap would have placed me quickest overall but as it stands we were only a 1,000th of a second off the top of the times so I'm very pleased."
Jeremy, who is currently fifth overall in the Formula Renault UK driver standings and within reach of a top three championship finish at the season's end, also ended today's Silverstone test as the quickest of the AKA Lemac team's three drivers.
Not only is the BillChaser-backed teenager in superb form on the track, he also has plenty to celebrate away from motor racing having achieved the A-level grades he needs to continue his education at Loughborough University.
Starting in October, Jeremy will study Economics and Politics and is certainly looking forward to continuing his education at, what is, one of the most highly regarded and best performing universities in the country.
Returning to his Formula Renault UK commitments, Jeremy's next on-track action will be ahead of the 15th and 16th rounds of the season at Donington Park Grand Prix Circuit on 9th/10th September, in support of the prestigious World Series by Renault.
An official test session will be held on the Wednesday before the event, 6th September, with qualifying set to take place on Saturday, 9th September, and both races scheduled for Sunday, 10th September.
Following the Donington Park rounds, just two more race meetings remain in the 2006 Formula Renault UK Championship. The first will be at Brands Hatch in Kent at the end of September while the Silverstone season finale takes place on 14th/15th October.
