Kenney Scores Dominant Double at Willow Springs
Sterling, Virginia (May 08, 2007) -- Liam Kenney enjoyed a break-out weekend at Willow Springs Raceway, Saturday 5th -- Sunday 6th May, as the 15-year-old racer banked a memorable double winning Rounds 5 and 6 of the 2007 Formula TR Pro Series 2000 Championship in California.
Piloting the #95 Liam Kenney Motorsports entry to victory lane in both races, Kenney's first wins of his rookie season racing the Formula Renault 2.0-litre car provided a much welcomed boost following a mixed start to the year in March with four races at Fontana.
Having paced the field in a scheduled test session earlier in the week at the Rosamond, California road course, Kenney's form at Willow Springs was again evidenced in Saturday's qualifying session, the Virginia racer capturing his first front-row start of the season sitting alongside pole-winner Billy Goshen.
When the green flag dropped at the start of Round 5 the Goshen-Kenney rivalry resumed, both drivers having competed against each other last season in the Formula TR 1600 Championship. A thrilling encounter followed as the pair initially diced for the lead before Goshen ran wide off-track allowing Kenney to seize his chance at the front. Having built a comfortable advantage over the chasing pack, Liam reveled in the race lead before collecting the win when the race was stopped four laps early thanks to a red-flag incident. Kenney was joined on the podium by Jeremy Braun in second and series leader John Knudsen in third.
Round 6 saw Kenney go one better in qualifying, the teenager capturing his first pole of the season for his second straight front-row start. Making the most of a clear track the young American checked out at the start of the 16-lap race building up an impressive three second advantage as the pack battled behind before a pace car period instantly wiped his lead. This failed to deter Kenney and at the re-start he simply pulled away again to maintain P1 over Goshen and Braun in second and third. The top-three remained unchanged at the checkered with Liam enjoying a weekend sweep of the top step of the podium.
"This is definitely a first for me," stated a jubilant Kenney. "It's my first sweep in racing and it's proof that my 2-litre campaign is alive and kicking now. We've applied what we learned as a team at Fontana and had a great weekend at Willow Springs as a result. I'm really happy we've bounced back with these wins and can't wait to get back on-track next month."
