Kenney to Kick Start '07 Campaign at Fontana
Sterling, Virginia (March 08, 2007) -- 2007 represents a new season and a new challenge for Virginia's Liam Kenney as the 15-year-old open-wheel racing standout prepares himself to compete in the Formula TR Pro Series 2000 Championship, starting with this weekend's opening round double-header at the California Speedway, Fontana, Saturday 10th -- Sunday 11th March.
Set for his sophomore racing season after an impressive rookie campaign in the 2006 Formula TR Pro Series 1600 Championship, finishing fourth overall with one win (Las Vegas Motor Speedway) and a tally of 12 podiums and three pole positions, Kenney graduates to the 2.0-litre class this year in the #95 Liam Kenney Motorsports entry.
With backing from Network Solutions, Piloti Shoes, Mobil 1, Mothers Waxes and Polishes, fSONA Optical Communications and Ristorante Zeffirelli, Liam's keen to back up his race winning credentials with another strong season and follow in the footsteps of Formula TR's most prominent graduates, notably Marco Andretti (IRL), Carl Skerlong (Champ Car Atlantic) and Colin Braun (Grand-Am).
Kenney's no stranger to the California Speedway, host of this weekend's season opener, with four races at the Fontana track under his belt from the 2006 season. At the corresponding round 12 months ago Liam successfully kicked off the year with a pair of second place podium finishes. Liam captured two-more top-five finishes on the 2.8-mile infield road course when the series returned for Rounds 11 and 12 in July, the teenage racer narrowly missing out on a podium in the first race, finishing fourth, before taking fifth in the second event.
"Fontana's definitely in my top-three favorite race tracks along with Miller Motorsports Park and Portland," stated Kenney enthusiastically. "The layout's a lot of fun and I can't wait to get out there in the 2-litre car for the first time. The track really caters to my style of driving with high speed corners and plenty of opportunities for late braking! I'm on a new learning curve stepping up in class this year but I'm confident I can put last season's experiences to good use and hopefully go one better at Fontana and take the top step of the podium!"
Liam Kenney will contest the full 20-race Formula TR Pro Series 2000 Championship, campaigning his 200bhp Formula Renault 2.0-litre open-wheel race car over 10 double-header weekends from March-November 2007. Circuits visited include California Speedway, Miller Motorsports Park, Buttonwillow Raceway and the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
