Skerlong confident ahead of Fontana return
Mukilteo, Washington (July 11, 2006) - Carl Skerlong returns to the scene of his opening victories in the 2006 Formula TR 2000 Series as the California Speedway plays host to Rounds 11 and 12 this weekend, 15th-16th July. The 17-year-old championship leader heads to the Fontana track, which kicked off the season back in March, with a comfortable 53 point lead following his eighth win of the season at the previous round in Nevada.
The 2.8-mile road course configuration at the California Speedway has proved to be a happy hunting ground for the Washington racer as he remains undefeated at the track having picked up victories there in his championship-winning Formula TR 1600 Series season in 2005 and at the start of his Formula TR 2000 campaign this year.
March's double-header saw Carl set-out his championship ambitions from the very start, capturing pole for both races before picking up fastest lap in each encounter to compliment his opening pair of wins. Fontana proved to be the launch pad for an incredible run of success, Skerlong going on to score seven straight victories before title-rival Dominic Scheer claimed his first win in Round 8 in Utah.
Scheer again denied Carl the win in Round 9 last time out in Nevada despite the title-leader's dominance throughout the race. An ambitious pass from Scheer just two laps from the checkered flag collected Carl and cost him the win, the young American salvaging a third place podium as a consolation. Round 10 saw a reversal of fortune as Carl hounded Scheer and capitalized on an off-track error by the race leader to claim P1 for himself. He never looked back and duly captured win number eight of the season to return to Fontana this weekend with a sizeable margin over Scheer in the title chase.
Looking ahead to Fontana Carl commented:
"I've always raced well at the California Speedway and I'm hoping to continue that form this weekend. We definitely have a good set-up to start with and I think we'll be in good shape for both races. Dominic's definitely getting faster but I think we'll have enough this weekend to keep ahead. Fontana's been good to me and I can't wait to get back there and go for it once again!"
Round 11 takes place at the California Speedway on Saturday, 15th July, with Round 12 held the following day, Sunday 16th July - www.californiaspeedway.com
