Wins for Goshen, Skerlong and Knudsen at Thunderhill Park

Round 15 - Saturday 12th August

2000 Class

Carl Skerlong streaked to his 12th win of the year at Thunderhill Park in Round 15, adding to his championship lead with additional bonus points for pole position and fastest lap of the race. The Odyssey Motorsports racer headed home John Knudsen and Dustin Welch at the end of the 17-lap race on the 3-mile Californian track.

Despite a lower than expected competitor turnout at the weekend the fight for pole proved closer than usual with Skerlong's fastest lap of 1m45.872s less than a tenth of a second quicker than Welch Racing's Dustin Welch in the #20 entry. Dustin used his speed to take the lead of the race on the opening lap but it proved to be short-lived as Skerlong assumed it back on the following lap and led all the way to the checkered flag.

John Knudsen, fresh off his first victory of the year in Portland last month, dumped Welch to third on the second lap to give chase to his 17-year- old rival but ultimately failed to mount a serious challenge leaving Skerlong a trouble-free run to the flag. Welch's third place effort marked the first time he'd been on the podium since Round 3 at Buttonwillow earlier in the year.

Bret MacDonald and Paul Mashouf completed the top-five having held station throughout the race, both drivers taking healthy points scores to bolster their respective standings in the championship table.

1600 Class

Billy Goshen steered his #82 Goshen Racing entry into victory lane for the first time this season as he triumphed in Round 15 of the Formula TR 1600 Class on Saturday afternoon at Thunderhill Park.

While the field was left a little depleted with some late withdrawals the action on-track proved to be no-less exciting with Goshen battling throughout the 30-minute race with Paladin Motorsports Liam Kenney and Kimball Williams Racing's Luis Martinez Jr.

Kenney grabbed pole position for the 16-lap race with a lap time of 1m52.783s, a stunning five tenths of a second clear of fellow front-row starter and Round 13 race winner Martinez

Jr. It was Martinez Jr. who made the better start and he commanded the lead of the race for the first six laps around the 3-mile Thunderhill Park.

Liam Kenney ducked past his rival on lap 7 and enjoyed his first lead laps of the season to assume control of the race. Kenney's run at the front lasted for eight tours until the charging Billy Goshen snuck into the lead with two laps remaining, Goshen taking the checkered flag and his first win in the 1600 class.

Behind him Kenney had to settle for second place, his seventh top-three finish in 2006, while early race leader Luis Martinez Jr. rounded off the podium. Odyssey Motorsports' Tayler Malsam concluded the 1600 runners in fourth.

Round 16 - Sunday 13th August

2000 Class

John Knudsen claimed his second win in four starts following a superb last- to-first run through the field on Sunday. To make Knudsen's win even more remarkable was the effort of his crew at Knudsen Racing, as well as those at Odyssey Motorsports, to replace an engine following a punctured oil pan on his race car to be able to make the start of the 17-lap race.

Carl Skerlong hold pole having won the previous day's race with John Knudsen being forced to start from the pit lane with his repairs finally executed just minutes before the green flag. The reigning Formula TR 1600 Champion held the lead for the first seven laps before a spin dropped him to third behind the resurgent Knudsen in second and new race leader Dustin Welch.

The top-three running order remained static for the next eight laps with Welch enjoying a clear track ahead as he led Knudsen and Skerlong around the 15-turn Thunderhill Park. Knudsen then seized the lead from Welch on lap 15 with Skerlong getting in on the action.

The fight for second resulted in contact between Carl and Dustin with the latter come off worse, Welch's race coming to an end just two laps shy of the finish line. Skerlong's second place keeps his incredible run of 15 straight podium finishes intact while CT Motorsport's Bret MacDonald rounded off the podium celebrations ahead of Paul Mashouf in fourth.

Carl Skerlong's season-long lead of the championship increased to 102 points thanks to his first and second places in California with John Knudsen a clear second in the standings ahead of Bret MacDonald back in third with four races remaining.

1600 Class

Round 16 produced another thrilling race with Billy Goshen once again producing a winning pass to capture his second straight victory over Liam Kenney and Luis Martinez Jr.

Goshen started from pole courtesy of his win the previous day but it didn't take long for Liam Kenney to mount his challenge for the win. Snatching the lead on the second lap, Kenney again impressed as he reveled in the battle for top honors in the 1600 class.

A determined Goshen shadowed Kenney in second and eventually regained the lead on the eleventh lap, the Californian successfully safeguarding his position all the way to the checkered flag. Behind the lead duo Martinez Jr. held third in what turned out to be a trouble-free run to yet another podium finish. Mirroring the finishing results from the first of the weekend's races, Tayler Malsam finished fourth in the #19 Odyssey Motorsports entry.

In the championship standings Parker Kligerman, despite his absence from both races at Thunderhill Park, maintains his series lead with four races remaining, the gap cut to 52 now with Billy Goshen's brace of wins moving him back up into second in the title hunt. Luis Martinez Jr. drops a spot to third place while Liam Kenney's performances promote him to fourth overall ahead of Tayler Malsam in fifth.
