SAM BIRD WINS BRITISH CLUB DRIVER OF THE YEAR AWARD

At a glittering Autosport Awards ceremony last night, Sam Bird (19, Claygate) won the first trophy of the evening, British Club Driver of the Year.

"I really wasn't expecting this, it's a very proud moment for me" said Sam after accepting the trophy from superstar commentator Murray Walker and former F1 driver Derek Warwick. Sam went on to talk about his hopes for a Formula 3 drive next year and said he'd be talking to some teams "later in the evening"

Sam had only returned from Valencia the previous night, having tested a GP2 car for the first time "it was amazing" he said "although I don't plan to drive in this category next year, I have definitely learned a lot from the experience. The Super Nova car was just awesome and I enjoyed working with the team -- at this level of motorsport, everything is so professional and I am really looking forward to the time I will race in one of these cars".

Sam will continue his Formula 3 testing programme this week with a view to choosing a team before the end of the year.
