Dutch anthem sounds for Kool and Maassen in Spa-Francorchamps!
SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS - On the racetrack at Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium) the Dutch anthem sounded for Mervyn Kool and Xavier Maassen yesterday and today. The second raceweekend of the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 was the only Formula racing class to be part of the 1000km of Spa of the Le Mans European Series. In the Belgian Ardennes a total of 20 drivers gathered for two exciting races in the rain.
In the first race on Saturday morning Kool started from poleposition and never saw that position endangered by any of his competitors throughout the race. It was the first victory for Kool in the NEC Formula Renault 2.0. "This really is the greatest race weekend in my career so far! My first pole position and then I won the race too!', said Kool after the race. John Edwards (Motopark Oschersleben) and Chris van der Drift (JD Motorsport) came second and third.
The NEC's Formula Renault 2.0 second race on Sunday morning was very hectic. Following a number of crashes in the beginning of the race a safety car was called for. The race was won by Xavier Maassen (JD Motorsport) who showed great performance as he started from sixth position. Filipe Albuquerque, who led the race after Chris van der Drift got a drive-through penalty for his jump start from pole position, did not finish due to a flat tire two laps before the end of the race. Albuquerque's teammate Kasper Andersen came in second and rookie Johnny Cecotto (Koiranen bros.), a new face in the field of drivers, scored a fantastic third place in his first race in the NEC Formula Renault 2.0.
The drivers in the new Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 are very competitve as there are now four different winners (Albuquerque, Van der Drift, Kool en Maassen) in as many races.
