Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 gets underway at Hockenheim

The Hockenheimring Baden-Wurttemberg is the location for the season opener of the 2008 Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 (NEC FR 2.0). Next weekend (April 26th-27th), the series will have two races during the "Jim Clark Revival" race meeting, one of the most popular German club racing events.

With a history going back 76 years, the 4.574 kilometres long circuit is one of the more historic motorsport venues in Germany. For many years, the Hockenheimring Baden- Wurttemberg has been the venue for the German Formula 1 Grand Prix and the circuit also traditionally hosts the season opener and the season finale of the DTM touring car series. In the past, the Hockenheimring Baden-Wurttemberg was known for its long sweeping straights into the forests. A few years ago, the lay-out of the track was changed and now, the circuit includes a "Parabolica" stretch. Fortunately, the unique "Motodrom" section with its huge grandstands and its stadium-like atmosphere remained unchanged.

With an entry of almost 30 drivers from 12 countries in 11 teams, the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 is living up to its international reputation, a clear indication for the popularity of the category for young up-and-coming drivers. This season, a calendar including many high-profile events, of which the "Jim Clark Revival" certainly is one, and web-based TV-footage of all the races accessible on the series' website www.necup.com all contribute to the series' popularity.

NEC FR 2.0 action at Hockenheim starts on Thursday with free practice from 11.05 till 11.35 h. Qualifying takes place on Friday in two heats from 11.40 till 12.30 h. The first race starts on Saturday at 9.00 h, the second race is on Sunday at 17.10 h. The two races are running over a duration of 25 minutes each.
