Karl Oscar Liiv demands both victories in Formula Renault 2.0 NEC at Assen
Young Estonian Karl - Oscar Liiv has managed a flawless performance during the Rizla Racing Days at TT track Assen. The wet conditions, but drying track gave way to spectacular races including tough fights for positions and intervention of race control.
The weekend was illustrated with the typical Dutch weather; sun, clouds and rain showers played their part in Northern Holland. Although the free practices and qualification had been dry, race control decided for a so- called 'wet race' on Saturday the seventh of August. Even if all teams were allowed to mount rain tyres on the car, only one participant chose to do so. Austrian Johann Ledermair, fastest driver in the Formula Renault 2000 qualification took a great risk with his profile tyres and a drying track.
After the lights switched off the two MP Motorsport cars obviously had the best start, at the cost of Jeroen Mul who had qualified on pole position. The young Estonian Liiv grabbed the lead, and managed to keep it until the chequered flag. Just behind Liiv, the fight for third position was a hard one. Dutchmen Jeroen Mul and Daniel de Jong were involved with some very close racing, finally resulting in a podium place for Van Amersfoort's Mul.
The Formula Renault 2000 class, where the participants race the penultimate version of the Renault 2 litre single seater, was won by Daniel Schilling, who strengthened his lead in the championship with 15 points to his brother on number two. Second in the Saturday race was Tony Kowalewski. The young German has proved he found the right pace and deserved a third visit to podium this year. Frank Suntjens performed well on his hometrack, and managed to secure a third position in the overall standings.
The eighteen participants of the Formula Renault Northern European Cup treated the 58.000 visitors of the eleventh edition of Rizla Racing Day to a great show on Sunday the 8th of August. The second race for the Formula Renault 2.0 was scheduled for 15.50 during another rainy afternoon. The conditions were quite similar to the one of the day before, differing in the amount of rain that had fallen just before the race. The track was remarkably wet, which made all participants start on rain tyres this time.
Liiv had qualified on pole during the session on Friday, leaving his teammate De Jong a second place. Liiv drove away with a clean start, but De Jong immediately had contact with Kevin Mirocha for SL Formula. The experienced German driver won the fight and took a second position. Race control intervened for the first time on Sunday, by putting the safety car on track. Rogier de Wit had left the track and had to be pulled back on. Luckily, he could continue which lead to the withdrawal of the safety car in the second lap.
Liiv seemed to be heading for his second win a row, until the last lap. Kevin Mirocha was close for a while already, and finally made his move in the back of the track. When the flag was shown, race control had decided that Mirocha's move had not been according to regulations, as the driver exceeded the white line with all four wheels. After Mirocha was put back for 30 seconds, Liiv was announced winner of Race 2, with Liroy Stuart and Ludwig Ghidi accompanying the Estonian to podium.
In the Formula Renault 2000, it was finally Johann Ledermair who made up for his race on Saturday and scored his fourth win of the season. With this victory, he passes Dear Schilling in the standings for the 2000 Cup. On top, Tony Kowalewski has shown how fast he really is and performed consistently throughout the weekend. He scored another second place, moving on to 198 points in the championship.
The next round of the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup will take place in the Czech Republic from the 27th to the 29th of August during the Truck Prix Most.
