Valtteri Bottas takes two home wins in Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 at Alastaro

Finnish driver, Valtteri Bottas continued his winning streak in the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 by claiming victory in both races at Alastaro. For the driver of the Motopark Academy team, these results were quite special as the Alastaro meeting not only was his home round, but also the first foray of the series into Finland. After six victories from as many rounds, Bottas now has a margin of 74 points over his German team- mate, Tobias Hegewald, with Portuguese Antonio Felix da Costa and Dutchman Stef Dusseldorp third and fourth respectively, the two only three points apart.

Qualifying:

In qualifying for the first race,Valtteri Bottas set the fastest lap time of 1.10.974 minutes, followed by Motopark team mate, Johan Jokinen (1.11,326) and Van Amersfoort Racing's Stef Dusseldorp (1.11.632). Finnish driver, Daniel Aho (Koirainen Bros) qualified a strong fourth with a lap time of 1.11.805.

Qualifying for the second race was a copy of the previous session in that Bottas again came on top with 1.10.883 minutes, but this time, he was followed by no less than three other Motopark drivers: Antonio Felix da Costa second (1.11.266), Vinicius Samarone third (1.11.298) and Johan Jokinen fourth (1.11.453). Daniel Aho qualified fifth with an identical time as Jokinen, but as Jokinen had set his time earlier, he had the more favourable grid position.

Race 1:

Weather was very windy and cloudy, but fortunately, it was dry. Following rainy weather on the day before, the track was a bit slippery, but it was dry. Valtteri Bottas lived up to his status as a local hero and favourite and claimed a convincing win, taking the chequered flag 7.559 seconds ahead of his team-mate, Tobias Hegewald. Kuba Giermaziak completed the team success by coming home third, ahead of two Dutch drivers, Van Amersfoort Racing's Stef Dusseldorp and MP Motorsport's Nicky Catsburg. The best- placed guest driver from the Formula Renault 2.0 Finland series was Jesse Krohn (XON), who came home tenth.

Post-race quotes Race 1:

Valtteri Bottas (1st place, Motopark Academy):

"It is great to win in Finland. The car was great today. I got a very good start and first half of the race I drove as fast as I could. The last half was just to secure to be first to cross the finish line. For tomorrow, my tactic is similar as today. Since I drove very well during practice in wet conditions, I am not worried if it rains tomorrow."

Tobias Hegewald (2nd place, Motopark Academy):

"This was my first race ever in Alastaro. The track is very small and the corners are very tight. I realy had to get used to it."

Kuba Giermaziak (3rd place, Motopark Academy):

"This was a very tough race and I am very happy with my third position."

Race 2:

The race took place in sunny and dry conditions, although the track was still damp after rain showers in the morning. Starting from pole position again, Valtteri Bottas didn't have the best possible getaway as his team- mate Antonio Felix da Costa overtook him on the run up to the first corner, but then Bottas soon restored the order and led all the way, claiming victory by coming home 5.410 seconds clear of Antonio Felix da Costa who was, in turn, followed home by Motopark team-mates, Tobias Hegewald and Johan Jokinen. GU Racing's Maximilian Wissel came fifth.

Post-race quotes:

Valtteri Bottas (1st place, Motopark Academy):

"I wouldn't say this was an easy race although last half was just to secure to be first to cross the finish line. The start of this season has been perfect for me, I am now leading the NEC-series with full points."

Antonio Felix Da Costa (2nd place, Motopark Academy):

"I am very happy with my second position. Alastaro circuit is quite small but interesting circuit."

Tobias Hegewald (3rd place, Motopark Academy):

"As I started from 9th position I am very happy with my podium place. I got a good start and first lap. I kept on pushing to be near Da Costa but couldn't overtake him. Overall, this was a successful weekend for me."
