SUPERB DOUBLE WIN FOR MP MOTORSPORT AT ASSEN

MP Motorsport made a welcome return to the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup at Assen in The Netherlands over the weekend, 7th/8th August, and enjoyed its most successful event of the year with two superb race victories for Karl Oscar-Liiv.

The Dutch team, a front-running regular in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, produced a sensational performance throughout the weekend and in front of 60,000 spectators at the TT track Liiv and team-mate Dani0x00ebl De Jong celebrated some fantastic results.

Very much a home event for MP Motorsport, the Assen weekend began strongly in qualifying with Estonian racer Liiv securing third on the grid for the opening race and Dutchman De Jong taking fourth -- both drivers setting exactly the same lap time to a single 1,000th of a second.

Their second best lap times, however, hoisted both MP Motorsport racers onto the front row of the grid for the weekend's second encounter with Liiv on pole position, just over a 10th of a second ahead of De Jong in second place.

At the beginning of Saturday's outing, which officials declared a 'wet race' even though all drivers bar one utilised slick tyres, Liiv made a terrific getaway to immediately move into the lead and in the end he took the chequered flag by almost a second from Kevin Mirocha.

De Jong ran in fourth place challenging for the final spot on the podium but he just wasn't able to find a way past his compatriot Jeroen Mul. At the finish on lap 16, just eight 10ths of a second separated the pair.

Rainfall on Sunday afternoon resulted in all competitors running on treaded, wet-weather tyres and at the beginning Liiv made no mistakes by cleanly holding the advantage at the front to lead. Even though he's missed several Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 races in recent months due to essential school exams, the 17-year-old showed he's lost none of his speed or ability.

Everything went perfectly for Liiv as his second victory of the weekend beckoned but on the final lap, Mirocha attempted a pass which was deemed in contravention of the regulations. Mirocha made contact with Liiv and although he got ahead of the Estonian, he was later penalised 30 seconds so Liiv was declared the rightful winner.

De Jong finished in fourth place once again, just missing out on the podium for the second time, but his race was compromised at the start when contact from the aforementioned Mirocha dropped him back from his starting position of second.

Then, the 18-year-old was given a drive-through penalty for a jump-start but a tactical move by the team enabled him to serve the penalty just as the Safety Car came in following a short cautionary period. This meant De Jong lost as little time as possible to his rivals and he was able to rejoin the race in the midfield.

Determined to make amends and finish as high as possible in the results, De Jong battled hard and produced some superb passes along the way. Slicing his way through the order, the Dutch teenager showed impressive speed and in the end he crossed the finishing line on lap 13 less than 0.1 seconds shy of the final rostrum placing -- a fantastic recovery.

Reflecting on MP Motorsport's hugely successful Assen weekend Sander Dorsman said: "We're all absolutely delighted to win both races, finally we seem to be free of the bad luck we've had in the last few events. It's always fantastic to do well at your home circuits, Karl-Oscar and Dani0x00ebl both did a great job.

"Dani0x00ebl was a bit unlucky when he was hit by Kevin Mirocha just after the start and then he had the drive-through penalty. The team made a very good tactical decision to bring him in to the pits when the Safety Car just came in though so he didn't lose too much time. Karl-Oscar performed very strongly in both races and he really deserved the wins. We really hope we can build on this now in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 and have some more success."

Next on the agenda for MP Motorsport is the sixth event of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 season, rounds 11 and 12, which will take place at Hockenheim in Germany on 4th/5th September.
