KIRILL OVCHARENKO TAKES ANOTHER TOP 10 FINISH AT HOCKENHEIM!
At Hockenheim Kirill Ovcharenko once again showed he is an upcoming talent. During the last round for the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 the Motopark Academy driver was doing really well. Despite problems with the gearbox in the qualifying he was able to finish in the top ten twice. With an eighth and a ninth place the 16-year old driver was more than satisfied. Even though Ovcharenko made his debut in the single-seaters at the halfway point of the season he finished the championship in 22nd place with 63 points.
PRACTICE + QUALIFYING:
Already in the only free practice session of the weekend the Russian driver showed his best side. Without any experience on the 3.692m long track he set the fifth time straight away in the forty minute long session. In the double qualifying session on Saturday afternoon Ovcharenko tried to set a fast lap, but hit gearbox trouble early in the session. In only one flying lap he was able to qualify in eleventh place in the first session. He had to sit out the second session, which meant he would start from the back of the field.
RACE 01 + 02:
From position eleven Ovcharenko had a difficult start on the wet track. During the fifteen laps of the race he was however getting into the rhythm as the laps went by and he started to get back through the field. Eventually he finished the first race in eighth place. On Sunday Ovcharenko had a good start from his position all the way down the grid.
Despite a lot of pushing in the first couple of laps the number 22 driver was able to get through the field with success. In the first lap he overtook five drivers and entered the top ten. In the final stages of the race the rookie was fighting with David Sigacev and Mateusz Adamski and was able to pass both. He crossed the line in ninth place.
KIRILL OVCHARENKO: "I am really satisfied with my results. We were on the pace from the first practice on. That gave us a lot of confidence, but a faulty gearbox spoiled it all. In both races I was able to find a way to the front and I finished in the top ten twice. I am really happy with my finish on Sunday afternoon. That was a tough job!"
FRANCISCO FREITAS, data engineer: "Kirill learned a lot in short period of time. He keeps making progress and is able to adapt himself quickly. Despite not having much experience he is a quick learner!"
JOS BURGGRAAF, mechanic: "It is incredible that Kirill has developed himself so quickly. Despite every circuit being completely new for him, he is able to get to grip with the circuit in record pace. At Hockenheim he once again showed he is of the right stuff. We will have a lot of pleasure from him."
