Third race weekend Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 at Assen
A fortnight after the double header meeting on the support package of the prestigious FIA GT Championship at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, teams and drivers from the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 are heading to Assen in The Netherlands for the third race weekend of the 2007 season. The famous "TT Circuit", home of the Dutch round of the Motorcycle World Championship, will be hosting the "ADAC Hansa Pokal" meeting, featuring the German Top 10 race package and the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0. With presumably the largest entry of the weekend, the only single- seater series to race at Assen in this event will be one of the undisputed highlights of the meeting.
Having hosted the world-famous "Dutch TT" since 1925 and also rounds of the Superbike World Championship, the "TT Ciruit" in Assen is among the most famous motorsport facilities in the world. A lot of work has been carried out over the last few years to ensure that the accommodation is fully up-to- date and in line with the highest safety standards for racing both on two and four wheels. A huge pit complex, VIP lounges and a state-of-the art media centre are catering for the needs of competitors and visitors alike.
First and foremost, however, the "TT Circuit" is considered as a drivers' circuit with some really challenging corners and plenty of opportunities for overtaking. Traditionally a motorcycling venue, the circuit has also hosted many car racing events like German Super Touring and Formula 3 and numerous one-make series. The most prestigious car racing event will certainly be the round of the American Champ Car Series, who will be racing at Assen in September. As an appetizer, however, the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 will provide thrilling single-seater action next weekend already.
German driver, Frank Kechele, is leading in the points' standings after four of this season's 20 rounds. After a pair of race wins in the season opener at Zandvoort and another win and a second place at Oschersleben, Currently, he is 33 points clear of his compatriot and team-mate, Tobias Hegewald, with Finn Valtteri Bottas in third place. Best-placed Dutch driver in the championship is Nicky Catsburg, who is jointly fourth together with Dane, Steffen Moeller. Dennis Retera and Romano de Ruit are jointly ninth, with Stef Dusseldorp only one point behind them in eleventh position.
The first race of the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 at Assen will be starting on Saturday, July 21st, at 17.45 h. The second race is scheduled for Sunday, July 22nd, at 11.25 h. Both races will run over a duration of 25 minutes.
