Ponte tops Phoenix testing

(Phoenix,AZ)--The North American Formula Renault 2000 Championship staged its first official test session today at Phoenix International Raceway in advance of this weekends race. Eurointernational's Juan Martin Ponte of Argentina netted the quickest lap of the day with a 58.115-second tour of the 1.51-mile infield road course.

"It's very good to get started this way," said Ponte. "I think we might still be able to go faster as we learn more about the car and try some new things with the gearing, but I am very satisfied. I really want to win here this weekend, I think it's very important to do that in the opening round to establish me and my team as winners and make everyone chase us."

Several drivers were chasing Ponte today, with series newcomer Marcos Gomes taking second on the day in his GTI/Roshfans Motorsports machine and Gelles Racing's Gustavo Sondermann third overall. Ponte's teammate Ricardo Imery showed well with the fourth fastest lap, ahead of Aim Autosport's Mark Wilkins. The field continues to show the competitive form demonstrated in the Winter Invitational, as the top ten cars were within one second of Ponte's time.

The North American Formula Renault 2000 Championship field will return to action Thursday with two practice sessions in advance of Fridays qualifying, with the race scheduled to get underway at 1:25 PM local time on Saturday. Full results to be posted at www.formularenaultna.com.

The North American Formula Renault Championships are sanctioned by Grand American, and provide a ladder for drivers to develop their talent, with a full in-house open-wheel progression available. The 2004 season will get underway April 8-10 at Phoenix International Raceway.

The Formula Renault V6 Championship is the top rung on the North American Formula Renault Championship ladder, which also includes the North American Formula Renault 1600 Championship and the North American Formula Renault 2000 Championship. The Formula Renault V6 is expected to make its North American competition debut in the latter stages of the2004 North American Formula Renault 2000 season.
