Antoine Bessette scores first Formula Renault career win
Two podiums in two days for the St-Bruno's native
Birmingham, AL, October 10, 2004 - Antoine Bessette battled difficult conditions to score his first career win in Formula Renault at the Barber Motorsport Park in Birmingham today. Under rainy conditions, Bessette outrageously dominated the second part of a double-header from start to finish, starting from pole.
Bessette showed his strength from the get-go, qualifying a full 9 tenth away from his closest rival, Brandon Thomas, for the second race of a double-header this weekend. Antoine Bessette went to work early, gaining a 12 seconds advantage in the first three laps. This lead vanished when the safety car was called following the first caution period of the day. This scenario would repeat itself, Antoine carving another 11 seconds lead before a new caution period would occur. After the last restart, Bessette got away cleanly, never to look back.
This was Antoine's first career win in Formula Renault, and he clearly wants more. "We couldn't ask for better conditions at the start of the race, said Antoine after his win. After yesterday's race, I was hoping for rain since I knew I'd have an advantage on a wet track. After the caution periods, we had to rebuild our lead three times to finally score the win. Given all this work, this win gives me an exceptional feeling. Hopefully, this feeling will carry us to the front again in Fontana in two weeks."
Sunday's win was Antoine's second podium this weekend, having scored a third position in the first race of the double-header. Qualified third, Antoine capitalized on this position to climb on the podium and earn important Championship points, which is still within reach for the St-Bruno driver. The first race was everything the second one wasn't, disputed on a green and dry track from start to finish.
This win couldn't come at a better time, since Antoine was welcoming a new marketing partner this weekend, Claude Lemyre RE/MAX Real Estate Brokers. "We're really happy to welcome Claude Lemyre RE/MAX Real Estate Brokers in the family, and we thank them for their support", said Antoine.
Bessette and his team are now focusing their attention on the last meeting of the season for Formula Renault, which will be held on the California Speedway of Fontana, California, October 29-31.
