PLOWMAN ONE STEP OFF MISANO PODIUM

Britain's Martin Plowman narrowly missed out on another Formula Renault 2.0 Italia podium at Misano on Sunday 23 July. Plowman put in another impressive performance to finish seventh in round 11 and fourth in round 12, promoting him to fifth in the championship in his first single seater season.

Qualifying on Saturday saw drivers battling with a greasy track but Plowman's two fastest lap times rewarded him with ninth on the grid for round 11 and fifth for round 12, with both races to be held the following day. On Sunday morning, Plowman and the Prema Powerteam decided to stick with their radical qualifying set-up for round 11.

The BRDC Rising Star got clean away from ninth on the grid but lost one place to Marco Frezza (I). On lap two, Plowman began to push and took team mate Edoardo Mortara (I) for ninth place. Contact between Mihai Marinsecu (RO) and Jaime Alguersuari (E) at Variante del Parco on lap seven saw Plowman promoted to seventh position.

By lap four, however, Plowman began to suffer severe oversteer and consequently came under pressure from Rahel Frey (CH). The Jenzer Motorsport driver tried to make the most of Plowman's disadvantage and the crowds were entertained with wheel to wheel racing between the pair for much of the remainder of the race. In the closing laps Plowman put in a final push and battled well to finish seventh, six tenths ahead of Frey.

A strong start from fifth on Sunday afternoon for round 12 saw Plowman take Alguersuari up the inside of the Misano corner and in the following turns begin to close on Adrian Zaugg (ZA) until Plowman had a sideways moment at Variante Arena. Despite a swift recovery Plowman lost time and came under pressure from Alguersuari but Plowman did well to stave off a challenge from the Spaniard on lap two at Carva del Carro.

With Alguersuari still in hot pursuit, Plowman pushed for the following five laps but the gap between the pair stayed at around three tenths of a second. During the middle section of the 30-minute race, Plowman did manage to edge away but Alguersuari mounted another challenge in the closing stages. Both drivers put in impressive performances to match each other's lap times lap after lap, with the gap staying steady at five tenths of a second.

Plowman continued to resist Alguersuari's advances and crossed the line in fourth place, just one step away from another podium finish, securing fifth in championship in the process. Plowman's efforts follow his second place at Hockenheim in the series, earlier in July.

Plowman commented: "It's been a really positive weekend for us. The Prema Powerteam did a fantastic job once again and together we are improving the car all the time. There was some great racing out there today. I had a good battle with Rahel Frey in the race this morning, we were battling wheel to wheel at times but we both gave each other the respect to race cleanly. It was a shame to miss the podium today but we've made great progress here."
