HENKI WALDSCHMIDT INCREASES LEAD IN ITALIAN FR2.0 CHAMPIONSHIP!

VALLELUNGA, MAY 13 2007 - For the second time this weekend Henki Waldschmidt ended up on the podium in the Italian Formula Renault 2.0 championship. After finishing on a nice third place yesterday he secured a great second place this afternoon at the Vallelunga circuit. The only Dutch competitor in the series increased his lead in the championship with the double podium finish. After four races Waldschmidt is comfortably leading with 126 championship points.

RACE 02:

On Sunday afternoon Waldschmidt started from the third place on the grid. He had a good start and passed Mika Maki (Epsilon Red Bull Team). Shortly afterwards the safety car was deployed when no less than seven drivers were involved in a crash. It took the officials ten minutes to clear the track of the debris of the Formula Renault 2.0 cars and get the race restarted. Waldschmidt, who started the race on a different set-up, had set his sight on Jaime Alguersuari. The driver from The Hague tried to threaten the Spaniard, but the Epsilon Red Bull Team driver increased his lead over Waldschmidt to a couple of seconds. After sixteen laps Waldschmidt crossed the finish line in second place. The number 25 also set the fastest race lap (1:35.033) which meant he got two bonus points again as well.

The next races for the Italian Formula Renault 2.0 championship will take place on June 15-17 at the 'new' Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

HENKI WALDSCHMIDT: "I can not be dissatisfied with yet another podium finish. The race start somewhat chaotic and I lacked some speed at the beginning. We opted for a different set-up with less grip, but the safety car spoiled it all. It meant I did not get in the right rhythm from the word go and set the fastest lap later on in the race. The race was too short to be able to threaten Alguersuari. With this fourth consecutive podium finish at Vallelunga I managed to do an excellent job for the title race in the Italian Formula Renault 2.0 championship. I will now return to my home and start preparing for the Formula Renault 2.0 test at Magny- Course in three weeks time."
