Weather Plays Key Role in Outcome

Marcos Gomes claimed Saturday's Formula Renault 2000 victory presented by Race Team Promotions with Antoine Bessette taking Sunday's rain filled event on the ninth and tenth of October at the elegant Barber Motorsports Park.
On the verge of rain, Saturday's race began with pole sitter Marcos Gomes leading Mark Wilkins into turn one. Wilkins made his attempt early, trying Gomes on the outside of turn five on lap one. Wilkins had to back out leaving Gomes driving for team GTI/Roshfrans with open track ahead. The rain held out as the Brazilian took the victory with Wilkins second and Bessette in third.
"On the first few laps I was definitely faster," Wilkins said. "I tried to pass Gomes because I knew I had to get it done early. There wasn't too much grip on the outside of turn five though. I would prefer it to be dry tomorrow, but if it's wet we'll still be in pretty good shape."
"Wilkins had a better start than me," Gomes recalled. "I was on the inside of turn five and Wilkins tried to pass on the outside. The guys raced really clean so I had no problems."
Sunday's race was all about the rain. Antoine Bessette starting from pole held his lead into turn one. Bessette driving for AIM Autosport began pulling out a lead until second place Ricardo Imery brought out the first caution of the race. After the restart second place runner Brandon Thomas driving for Gelles Racing diced with last place starter Marcos Gomes. A mistake by Thomas later in the race gave Gomes second place. It was all about Bessette, though, taking the victory as the rain picked up.
"Through the kink on the back straight I just hit a puddle and spun," Thomas sadly explained. "That's when Gomes got by me."
"I was running very good laps but Bessette was a little faster," Gomes said. "With a small amount of rain my car was good but with a lot of rain it was not so good. Second is good for the championship though."
"I love running in the rain," Bessette smiled after the race. "It was a little stressful with all the yellow flags but it turned out O.K.."
The next rounds on Race Team Promotion's schedule are at California Speedway in Fontana, California on October 30th and 31st.
