Four races. Four contestants. One title
Fifteen races down and four to go. Just two rounds remain in the 2004 edition of the Eurocup FRV6: the first this weekend in Oschersleben (Germany), and the finale in October (7-8) in Dubai (United Arab Emirates).
Having been one of the most regular finishers this year, Mondini (EuroInternational) has now moved into the top spot overall. But the Swiss-Italian cannot afford to take his foot off the gas, as just 18 points behind him lies Britain's Ryan Sharp (Jenzer Motorsport), ready to snatch any opportunity. Belicchi (AFC Motosport) and Jani (Dams) are also still in with a shot of the title, though Imola put a dent in both of their championship campaigns.
Despite lying 56 points behind Mondini, Neel Jani still has a slim chance of overall victory. But his weekend in San Marino was catastrophic, ending both races by the side of the track just as he was lapping second in the Grand Race and leading the Super Sprint. "I've never seen that before," he said afterwards, "It's like at Magny Cours, taking just two points from the weekend. Thankfully it's tight at the top and mathematically I'm still in with a chance. But it's going to be tough."
The odds are better that either Mondini or Sharp will take the 2004 championship, thus earning them the chance to get behind the wheel of the F1 RS 24, currently enjoying a successful season in Formula 1 thanks to the efforts of Jarno Trulli and Fernando Alonso. Modena's Belicchi also has everything to play for mathematically. Just 31 points behind the leader, the Italian is one to watch, even though he seems to have hit a rough patch.
If there's one man who might upset proceedings for the leaders, it's Christian Montanari. Since joining the Eurocup at Donington, he's certainly been leaving his mark, taking an amazing 122 points from 6 races.
With his impressive four podium finishes and once race win, Montanari is going all guns blazing with his team-mate Pasini to take the constructors' title for Victory Eng. The top team at the moment is EuroInternational. The pressure's on, and things will be heating up trackside at Oschersleben. And only the bravest will call the winner yet!
