Good day's work for Van Dam
Yesterday, the Eurocup Formula Renault Teams took to the Zolder circuit for a single day of collective testing. Carlo Van Dam (SG Formula) produced another great performance at the Belgian venue by becoming the quickest of the 33 drivers taking part in this test. Another good day for the Dutch driver who had already topped two other pre-season tests in Misano and Nürburgring! Teams and drivers will have a few days off before they arrive at Paul Ricard next Tuesday for the final pre-season test.
It was a rainy morning when the Formula Renault cars first stepped out onto the Zolder circuit in Belgium. Junior Strous set the fastest lap time in the rain. Jenzer Motorsport already knows the value of a victory at this track, having achieved a double win at last year's season opener with Ammermüller.
Ate Mustonen (Koiranen Bros) and Andy Zaugg (Cram Competition) were only 0.3 seconds off the pace set by Strous. Daniel Clos, Zaugg's Jenzer Motorsport team-mate, was 4th quickest. The Spaniard put in a great performance in the Italian Formula Renault race held at Vallelunga last weekend.
The track started to dry in the afternoon, allowing the drivers to improve their best timed laps. In this session another experienced driver set the fastest lap: Carlo Van Dam (SG Formula). With this latest performance he has really confirmed that he is in great form, after finishing top in two other test days in Misano and Nürburgring.
Top South African driver Andy Zaugg (Cram Competition) and the Dutch driver Van der Drift (JD Motorsport) finished in P2 and P3 respectively. Zaugg was very close to Van Dam, a mere 0.002 seconds slower.
The 2006 Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 season will start at this track at the end of April with two local drivers in the starting line-up: Bertrand Baguette, in his second year with the Basque outfit Epsilon Euskadi, and Fred Vervich, who has secured a last minute drive in the Eurocup! Two appreciated drivers that will have the support of the Belgian crowds...
But before that, the Eurocup drivers move on to the Paul Ricard circuit (April 18-19) for one final test outing!
