Eurocup F.Renault 2.0 : SG Formula's championship hopes dashed in Barcelona
Dutch ace Carlo Van Dam was just three points behind Chris Van der Drift before the final rounds of the Eurocup, which took place at Barcelona. But Portuguese Filipe Albuquerque won races 1 & 2 from pole and eventually took the title. Carlo had to be content with third place in the overall ranking. SG Formula is the runner-up of the Teams championship, thanks to Frenchman Tom Dillmann's double podium finish.
Carlo lost part of his chances in qualifying. His first flyer was ruined as he went off in the last right-hander. A great shame, because the Dutchman had set the fastest time in the second sector. With his second set of tyres, Carlo was hampered by a puncture, which pushed him back to row 2 for Race 1 and row 3 for race 2. In Saturday's race, Carlo paid dearly for his poor start and finished 5th earning the fastest lap bonus point. Later, he and 9 other drivers got a 25 second-penalty for having set their fastest lap while yellow flags were waved somewhere on the circuit. In spite of that, Carlo and Chris were joined leaders before the final race of the season on Sunday-- With a recovering Albuquerque only 2 points behind! In fact the latter took an early lead, won for the second time of the meeting with Tom Dillmann on his toes from lights to flag, and secured the title. The young SG Formula driver finished second for the second time of the meeting, scored the fastest lap point, and consequently moved up to the 8th position in the championship ranking.
Team Boss Stephane Guerin said: "I would like to congratulate Filipe Albuquerque, he won 4 races and deserves the title. Carlo was incredibly fast in qualifying but this 1 euro-valve problem cost us dear. Fastest laps in races 1 & 2 and Tom's podium finishes prove that the whole team did a great job and that we were ultra-competitive." A new driver joined the La Rochelle-based stable this week-end. Alexandre Marsoin will take part in both French Championship and Eurocup next year with SG Formula. "Alex showed in free practice that he had the potential to fight for a Top 10 finish. He couldn't make it on Sunday due to a transmission failure during the start procedure. But his first outing with our team is promising."
SG Formula's staff is already looking forward to the test sessions, which will take place very soon on various tracks in order to prepare for the next season.
