Formula Renault 2.0 on skis!

The second day of Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 collective testing at the Nurburgring has been cancelled after proceedings were disrupted due to snowy conditions. The best time was set by Oliver Oakes (Motopark Academy).

After packing up and leaving Barcelona, the teams headed straight for Germany for two more day's testing. But while the conditions may have been ideal in Catalonia, in the Eifel mountains they were far from it!

On Wednesday morning, the track was dry but the track temperature did not get up above five degrees. Most drivers put in thirty or so laps in the morning with the fastest time being set by Fabio Onidi. Motopark Oschersleben thus secured the three best times with Oliver Oakes and Tobias Hegewald behind Onidi.

The dry conditions held until the middle of the afternoon. As the sun tried to peek through, the Motopark team continued to show it was in control. This time, Oakes set the fastest time becoming the only driver to go faster than 1'59''. Fabio Onidi and Frank Kechele completed a new one-two-three for the German team.

Then, at four in the afternoon, the snow started to fall, forcing all the cars back into the pits. By dusk, the paddock was covered in a white blanket of snow. On Thursday morning, the track was nowhere to be seen with nearly 20 centimetres of snowfall overnight! There was no choice but to cancel the second day of testing.

After taking part in several Eurocup races last season, Oliver Oakes says he is ready to move up a gear: "Despite the weather conditions, I am obviously satisfied. It's a good result both for me and the team as my teammates also put in good performances. We switched onto fresh tyres just at the right moment to put in very respectable times. This year my aim is to go for the title. The Motopark team has proven that it has what it takes by taking Filipe Albuquerque to the title last year. It won't be easy, but I'm putting my faith in their experience to help me make the step up."

The Eurocup teams now head for Le Mans for the last two days of collective testing (March 26-27) before the start of the season.
