Albuquerque by a whisker
Filipe Albuquerque (Motopark Academy) has taken both pole positions in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0. Tom Dillmann (SG Formula) also confirms that he is on top form with two front row spots. Kasper Andersen (JD Motorsport) will line up on row two alongside Carlo van Dam (SG Formula) and Dani Clos (Jenzer Motorsport) respectively. The leader in the overall standings, Chris Van der Drift (JD Motorsport) qualified with the fifth fastest time for both races.
There were only fifteen or so cars out on track in the first ten minutes of the session. Kasper Andersen unsurprisingly moved into provisional pole after being fastest in collective testing yesterday.
But when the entire field starting going after pole, the Dane's time did not stand for long. Pole position then started to change hands with every driver that crossed the line!
Midway through the session, Andersen regained the upper hand with a lap in 1'39''570. This put him ahead of the two SG Formula drivers Tom Dillmann and Carlo van Dam. They were in turn followed by Filipe Albuquerque, Chris van der Drift and Dani Clos.
All the drivers then started coming in for their fresh set of tyres. Pole was clearly going to be decided on the second run!
With six minutes to go, the tyres started to get up to temperature and the times started to drop fast. Tom Dillmann was the first to go faster than Andersen. Then, Filipe Albuquerque went 84/1000ths better with only four minutes to go.
With one minute left, Albuquerque, Dillmann and Andersen were still all grouped together within less than a tenth of a second. Carlo van Dam, Chris van der Drift, Dani Clos and Bertrand Baguette were together in another group from fourth to seventh. But nothing was to change before the chequered flag, which signalled Albuquerque's domination of qualifying for the second time this season.
