A costly error
When Arthur Pic arrived at Silverstone for the second-last Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup event, he knew that it would prove crucially important. His aim was to close the gap to Kevin Korjus so that the season would end in a thrilling duel in Barcelona. He needed an awesome qualifying session and an eighth and ninth pole! Unfortunately, he made a mistake at this crucial point of the meeting dashing his chances, and his rival did not let the opportunity slip through his fingers.
A huge crowd turned up at Silverstone for the World Series by Renault. This circuit steeped in history, could have been a precious ally for Pic in his quest for victory as he had put on a stunning performance in 2009: he was the best rookie and finished just outside the top three.
The early stages of qualifying went off well. The Frenchman was on the pace straight away and he topped the time sheets on his first two laps. The third wasn't quite so good but he improved in sectors 1 and 3. He was even quicker on lap 4 until he went off. "I overdid it in Becketts and the car got away from me. Race Control hung out the red flag and that led to the cancellation of my fastest lap."
This is the way the double penalty works in the Eurocup. The Tech 1 Racing driver was unable to take part in the final laps of the session, and he ended up in thirteenth and twentieth places on the grid for the two races.
On the positive side, he did a lot of overtaking on both Saturday and Sunday to try and bag the maximum number of points in the championship. In a single weekend, the Equipe de France FFSA driver probably passed more cars than in the first twelve rounds of the championship combined. He finished seventh in race 1 and after pulling back seven places on the first lap in race 2 he stormed up through the field to take eighth spot. But it was the end of his title hopes. "I paid for my mistakes early on in the year," said Pic philosophically. While he is assured of a top-3 finish in the FR 2.O Eurocup, he will go to Barcelona with the avowed intention of clinching his runner-up spot, which will help Tech 1 Racing to victory in the teams' championship.
Next round on the Catalonian circuit in Spain on 9th-10th October.
