Caldarelli shows impressive shape at Spa

Andrea Caldarelli confirmed to be among the leading pack of the 2008 Formula Renault Eurocup. At Spa-Francorchamps the Italian, part of the Toyota Driver Program, entered the first round of the season for SG Formula repeating the impressive results shown during preseason testing. On the team's Tatuus car, he fought for pole until the last second and ended up in 3rd behind Finn Valtteri Bottas and team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, the grid being composed by a record-high 48 cars. At Race 1's start, Caldarelli moved past Bottas at the beginning, then chased Ricciardo and consolidated the runner-up place he kept until chec- kered, scoring his maiden Eurocup podium. On Race 2, he made an outstanding start and took the lead, but was hit from behind by Mehri, who cut the Right Rear wheel of the SG car with his front wing. At the following corner, Andrea found himself with a completely flat tyre, spun, and was hit by several other drivers, leaving the racetrack in disappointment.

"Our weekend had two faces. On Race 1, we proved to have one of the fastest cars of the whole pack, cruising in the top positions and taking a team double. I obviously would have been even happier with a win under my belt, but it was a great team effort, ant that's what matters. On Race 1 I took off from the second row, and when I managed to get rid of Bottas Ricciardo was too far to catch up. On Race 2, I successfully managed to pass both of them when Mehri made a mistake ruining a surely good race and a probable win. I'm really looking forward to my next races, scheduled for this weekend with the second WEC Event".
