The first qualifying of the week end was not a quiet time for the DAMS drivers.
Jose Maria LOPEZ left his pit very late as he is used to do and set the fastest time on his second lap. Everything seemed to go as planned when he hit the back of GOMMENDY's car in a quick lap. "It was a misunderstanding between Tristan and me. I was sorry, he was too and we have been able to finish the session any way." After his contact with GOMMENDY, LOPEZ had to stop to change the nose of the car. At this moment, MASTUURA took the pole only 0.06 of a second ahead of LOPEZ. The time remaining for LOPEZ was 4 minutes and 30 seconds, it was enough for the DAMS driver to improve his time by nearly half a second and drop MATSUURA 4 tenths of second behind.
Eric BOULLIER, Head Manager and race engineer of LOPEZ : "This morning Jose has shown the progress he has made with his way to manage a session, with traffic, slow cars, accidents and dirty track, yellow flags, and contacts with other cars. He had a very mature attitude and did not get nervous after his contact with GOMMENDY. I think this is the best improvement this year in his driving".
Mike DEN TANDT did not have the opportunity to complete a full quick lap this morning. "After I did a lap to warm my tyres (which is finally my qualifying time), I lost 2 laps behind MELO. I was trying to let him go and leave a very big gap between us, but he did many slow laps in a row and I caught him every time when I was pushing and I had then to slow down and keep my tires for another lap. When MELO was not here any more, a yellow flag made me loose another lap. Then, the time remaining was short and I decided to push hard when I saw that the track was clear. Unfortunately, I lost the control of the car in corner 7. I am very disappointed but I want to focus now on this afternoon's qualifying."
