Skerlong set for double-duty in Portland
Mukilteo, Washington (July 20, 2006) - Carl Skerlong is set to pull double- duty this weekend, 22nd-23rd July, at the Portland International Raceway (PIR), Oregon as he competes in both the Star Mazda Series and the Formula TR Pro Series 2000 class.
The 17-year-old stand-out will compete on the 1.967-mile road course for the second time this season following his SCCA Rose Cup appearance at the track last month where he picked up both National and Regional wins racing a Formula Atlantic car. Skerlong's busy weekend kicks off with his second appearance of the season in the Star Mazda Series.
Teaming up with the Oregon-based Northwest Autosport, with whom he enjoyed a successful test with last week at PIR, Skerlong will be keen to further demonstrate his talents in the category following a top-ten debut at the season-opener at Sebring in Florida earlier this year. Since then Carl has kept himself busy winning in the Formula TR Pro Series 2000 class.
In action again last weekend Carl held on to his impressive unbeaten record at the California Speedway, Fontana. Picking up wins there last season on his way to the Formula TR Pro Series 1600 title, he kicked off his 2000 class campaign with a pair of wins back in March and mirrored that accomplishment last weekend to further extend his series lead. He now boasts a record of ten wins in twelve starts and has yet to finish off the podium.
Carl's participation and subsequent focus on Round 7 of the Star Mazda Series on Saturday means he'll skip Round 13 of the Formula TR Pro Series but he'll return on Sunday to race in Round 14 and hopefully pick up where he left off. He currently holds a comfortable 104 point advantage over John Knudsen in second place and he'll safely rejoin in the lead, albeit reduced in his absence from Round 13.
Having posted top-six practice times in Star Mazda today in Portland Carl commented:
"We're at the front of the pack heading into the weekend which is good considering there were 17 cars separated by a second today in practice. My Star Mazda team-mate Ryan Justice has been a big help already and we've been working together on data. Hopefully we'll get it nailed and get a couple of Northwest Autosport car's on the podium."
Carl's second 2006 Star Mazda Championship start takes places at 3:20pm PST on Saturday, 22nd July, followed by his return to the Formula TR Pro Series in Round 14 at 1pm PST on Sunday 23rd July.
