SUPERB PODIUM FINISH FOR A1 TEAM INDIA DRIVER IN SEPANG
A1 Team India driver Parthiva Sureshwaren was back in racing action this weekend, in the Formula Renault V6 Asia Championship. With a last minute deal to participate in this Series the Chennai born racer had no time to test his race car prior to the first race weekend, making his debut in Friday practice with just two hours of running before Saturday qualifying. The Indian driver went on to finish seventh in the Sprint race and a stunning second place in the Feature race - the best finish for any Indian driver in the Asian Festival of Speed races at Sepang this weekend.
With only limited experience of the car, Sureshwaren made a mistake in qualifying, resulting in contact with the barriers and damage to the car. Although he had posted sixth fastest lap in qualifying, Sureshwaren was forced to start the Sprint race from the pit lane after failing to make the start grid in time andd despite the best efforts of his team. Lying at the back of the field on the first lap, Sureshwaren was determined to improve his position and in a sterling drive made his way through to cross the line seventh, the position he would take for the later Grand race.
With the team working through the night to prepare the car for Sunday's race, Sureshwaren and his engineers worked on finding the optimum set up for the main race. However, a wet warm up session on Sunday morning prevented the team from testing their revised set up.
Sureshwaren had a good start in the second race, making up two places before turn two and avoiding a mêlee on the first lap. Emerging unscathed, Sureshwaren was up to fourth place before the race was red flagged due to debris on the track.
At the restart, the Indian driver held his grid position and moved up to third place by the end of lap one - the position he would maintain for the remainder of the race. However, the second place car was later deemed to have made a jump start, elevating Sureshwaren to this placing in his first race of the season.
Reflecting on the weekend, Sureshwaren commented, "Second place in the Grand Race at the Sepang race track is a fantastic way to start my championship challenge. I have not raced a lot recently; my last race was for A1 Team India in Australia earlier this year, which was a steep learning curve. However, those few days of racing action have helped me regain my form and profile and I must thank A1 Team India for that. I am very happy with the way things have started for me again this season and would like to thank my sponsors, THE TRAVEL MARKET from Dubai. My team, Eurasia Motorsport, have done a great job this weekend, and I really appreciate all the effort each and every team member has put in over the course of the weekend to help me get this great result."
Sureshwaren will resume racing competition for the third and fourth rounds of the Formula Renault V6 Asia championship, with a return to the Malayisan F1 circuit in Sepang from 23 - 24 June.
