Formula Renault Asia Cup championship winning team, Asia Racing Team (ART) Motorsports has invited Malaysia's promising young driver Nik Iruwan to test one of its Formula Renault cars at the Zhuhai International Circuit, China for two days this weekend. It will be the first time for the Kelantanese driver to test with a Tatuus built Renault powered car.
"The team has been in talks with me after my last race in Europe last year and they have shown great interest in getting me to test their cars. I've heard a lot of good things about Art Motorsports and with my experience, I hope I can help the team prepare for the new season", said Nik Iruwan.
The confirmation of the test has ended speculation of Nik testing for Meritus Racing in the Formula V6 Asia by Renault and a possible drive in a full season program with the team. Nik chose to stick to his plans and believes a season in Formula Renault Asia Cup will keep his racing career on track. "I've said many times that I would like to race at the front end and fight for wins in 2008. I believe Art Motorsports has the package to give me just that and this test will give us the opportunity to work together for the coming season. My commitment for the team is already a sign of how good the team really is", added Nik Iruwan.
French owned Art Motorsports won the Team's Championship and finished runner-up in each of the last three seasons of Formula Renault Asia Cup. They ran some of the famous Asian drivers in the past which includes Kazuki Nakajima (Williams F1 driver), Kamui Kobayashi (Toyota F1 test driver), Kohei Hirate (F3 Euro Series), Kazuya Oshima (F3 Euro Series Toyota driver) as well as a list of top European drivers like current rookie driver for A1 Team Switzerland, Alex Imperatori.
Formula Renault Asia Cup comprises of 7 race weekends at over 3 countries in China, Malaysia and Macau. Malaysia will host the rounds at Sepang International Circuit and Pasir Gudang Circuit in Johore. Formula Renault Asia Cup is part of the Formula Renault championships that run in all over the world across different continents. The famous ones are Formula Renault Euro Cup, Formula Renault UK and Formula Renault France.
Nik Iruwan spent 2007 competing in the ultra-competitive Formula Palmer Audi Series in the UK, racing against some of the big names in motorsport including sons of Formula 1 drivers including Alex Brundle, Jolyon Palmer, Jack Clarke and Stefan Wilson, younger brother of Justin Wilson. Nik Iruwan had some strong finishes in the championship finishing in the top 10 and ended as the highest non-British driver in the series. Recently, runner-up of the series, Stefan Wilson won the prestigious Autosport BRDC Young Driver Award and will be invited to test with the Mclaren Formula 1 Team in 2008.
Philippe Descombes, Team Manager of Asia Racing Team (ART) Motorsports commented:
"For Asia Racing Team this is an excellent opportunity to test one of the most promising Malaysian drivers. I hope we can create a good 'symbios' between each other as we did with our past race winners. We believe Nik has the potential to be a top contender if he decides to return to return to Asia motor racing scene. He is the kind of driver that every team is looking for".
