Andrea Caldarelli hit by hard luck at Estoril

Andrea Caldarelli faced another tour-de-force at Estoril, where he entered four races. The Italian Toyota Driver Program pilot took part in both the Eurocup F.Renault 2.0 and the F.Renault 2.0 West European Cup races with SG Formula. Despite coming to the Portuguese racetrack with high hopes and the lead in the Eurocup standings, Andrea faced a much tougher weekend than expected. A progressive loss of top speed on his racecar, together with braking issues didn't allow to defend the top spot, and forced him to leave the venue in 4th place. Things seemed to improve in qualifying, when Andrea made it to the Superpole session after scoring the 4th fastest mark. Unfortunately, he was kept into the pits too long, managing to complete just two laps before a red-flag stopped on-track activity. As a consequence, he was forced to try for an improvement during the last couple of minutes, when anyone else got out generating heavy traffic. He ended up in 9th place, far away from the main title contenders. On Race 1, Andrea got stuck in traffic and ended up in 8th, before having to settle for 12th in the second heat. The two WEC races were unfortunate too, as the Italian ended up off-track due to a contact on Race 1 and eventually made up to 9th on Race 2.

Caldarelli is currently laying 4th in the Eurocup standings with 101 points, behind series' leaders Bottas (116), Ricciardo (115) and Mehri (105). In the West European Cup, he's one spot up, trai led by Ricciardo and Mehri. The WEC will now feature three events in the next three weekends, at Spa (Oct.5), Magny Cours (Oct.12) and Barcelona (Oct.19), the latter one being shared with the final Eurocup round.
