Round 1: SA SILVA wins, Alon Day stages remarkable fight
The 5th round of 2009 AFR took place on Sunday. Pole sitter Luis SA SILVA led the entire race to take the winner's trophy. Tengyi Jiang of FRD Racing team was 2nd with 3 seconds' difference. The young driver from Top Speed racing team, Alon Day, staged a good fight by starting from 13th and finishing 3rd. Zhi Qiang Zhang from March 3 racing team captured 4th, while Luca Ferigutti finished 5th.
At the start of the race, Team ART had a very favorable starting grid by occupying the first 2 rows. SA SILVA, on pole, had a good start which helped him get in front from the outset of the race while his teammates Benjamin Rouget and Ferigutti followed very closely behind on the first lap. By the end of the first lap, however, Tengyi Jiang overtook Ferigutti and then handed the 3rd place back to Ferigutti after 2 laps. Alon Day was indeed a highlight of the race as he started from 13th and finished the race in 3rd. Day overtook 3 cars right after the race started and moved up to 4th in lap 5. In lap 6, a car spun on the track and safety car was sent out for 1 lap. In lap 7, Day overtook Zhi Qiang Zhang and moved to 3rd.
Round 2: Double wins for SA SILVA, Alon Day leads the championship
The 6th round of AFR started at 3:30 in the afternoon. Luis SA SILVA enjoyed another win and Alon Day captured 2nd, with Tengyi Jiang 3rd. SA SILVA didn't get off to a very good start, yet it was good enough to enable him to stay in the lead. Alon Day started from the 2nd row and managed to overtake Tengyi Jiang on the front straight after an entire lap of preparation. Day then failed to pass SA SILVA, another very fast driver from team ART, and settled for 2nd.
SA SILVA, the winner of the weekend, indicated after the race that he and his car were in a good condition this weekend. "The 5th round was perfect, the start, the corners and the end, everything. In the 6th round I didn't start very well yet thanks to the well set car and my stability, I won the race. Tengyi Jiang and Alon Day are 2 very competitive drivers in the championship. It's an honor to race with them. Meanwhile, I would love to take the opportunity to thank my sponsors China Sonangol and CIF."
After this weekend, Alon Day took the lead from Benjamin Rouget and leads the points table with 11 points. Benjamin Rouget is now 2nd with his teammate SA SILVA following very closely behind.
For Rounds 7 and 8, the AFR championship will travel to Chengdu for the C1 racing weekend in September.
